With the beautiful colors of Fall surrounding the outside of your home, why not allow some of the same colors and smells into your home office?

Decorating and Candy

>>Fall candles and artificial leaves can make nice, peaceful decorations for your home office. Bath and Body Works® sells seasonally scented candles as well as the Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. The Hobby Lobby also has garlands of leaves as well as other autumn decorations to spruce up your home office.

>>Looking for a Fall treat, but don’t want to spend too many calories? Then try candy corn or a Tootsie Pop. Placing them in a clear jar can also add color to your home office. Or use CreativeHands foam stickers to decorate the clear jar.

>>Candy corn makes a great fat-free snack with only 150 calories in 26 pieces. The Tootsie Pop has about 60 calories and can be converted into a “ghost pop” with a 6″ round white cloth and a strand of yarn to tie it at the base. Then use a black Sharpie® marker to draw the face.

Maintenance and Decluttering – In Office

>>If your home office has plants, they may need to be rotated. With the days becoming shorter and less light available to your plants, you may need to decide which plants will need the most sunlight and rotate accordingly.

>>Does your freshly raked yard make you cringe at the clutter in your home office? Then start your Fall cleaning for your office.

>>Clean out your offline files and hard copies of documents, and get rid of what you don’t need. Call your local government extension office or check your local newspapers to see if there is a community shredding event. This would be a chance to get rid of this clutter.

>>Consider using fall colors to file offline papers.

Red can represent urgent or very important.

Orange can mean moderately important or pending.

Then allow the color yellow to mean miscellaneous.

>>Old pairs of eye glasses can be donated to your local Lion’s Club with drop-off boxes usually located at public libraries and other locations.

>>Unwanted magazines can be taken to designated recycling stations within your county or you can cut out or peel off the mailing label (if there is one) and donate them to your local library for others to take home and enjoy. Sometimes doctors’ offices or clinics will also accept them.

>>Too many note pads and pencils? Consider donating them or wrapping them up and giving them as a gift to your favorite local charity or son or daughter’s school teacher. You can always save them and donate them at designated drop-offs for next year’s school year.

>>Clear containers can be a great way to get organized offline as well as serve as a good reminder. Select fall colors for your lids such as red, orange, yellow, and dark brown. The “clear” will remind you of upcoming projects which will eventually need to be worked into your schedule.

>>A memento album or wall hanging can be made on a canvas from sentimental clutter. Just glue the pieces on the canvas and add photos to the background.

>>Unwanted clothing can be donated to Goodwill or any other local charity for a taxable donation. Hopefully, your home office does not have too many clothes in it, but we who work at home can understand how that could happen.

>>Worried about throwing out something that you might need in the future? Place items in a box or basket and give the container a four-month deadline. After four months, revisit the container. If you still haven’t used any of the items in the container, it is probably safe to donate the items or dispose of them.

>>A very good rule is that if you haven’t used something in two years’ time, you probably don’t need it.

Then let’s not forget about online clutter!

>>Emails and deleting any old files on your laptop or PC can be a wonderful way to start a new season. While the subject of email management can be a topic all its own, there are two easy rules to remember. There is the 30/30 rule which states that you not have more than 30 unread emails in your inbox at any given time.

>>If you do have more than 30 unread emails, then you need to SAP it. Just like the maple tree. This means the emails should be SAVED in a labeled folder, ARCHIVED or placed in a folder marked PENDING A REPLY.

>>And of course, with the holidays just around the corner, you will want to update your Facebook account with your autumn pictures of your yard, kids in costumes, and share any of your favorite holiday recipes and crafts. Also, you might want to Tweet about your online recipe and craft findings as well as pin it up on Pinterest.

Just as Fall can be a beautiful time of the year outside, it can now become more attractive time of year for your home office. With less clutter to crowd the outside view.

You are very welcome, Jess. It is amazing what you can find when you declutter.

Great ideas! Kevin and I recently did some decluttering, both in my office and the entire apartment – we finally got all my candles put up in different places around the apartment (none of them in my office, unfortunately, though I do have a flameless candle I could use in here).

Good for you, Erica! Isn’t it a great feeling to not have all that clutter in your way? Yes, I have a flameless candle and my scented candles too. I just love the smells of Fall.
