As a call center agent, you’ll provide some type of service to customers via telephone.

Some jobs focus on customer services, whereas others focus on telemarketing, health services, and more.

With so many remote call center jobs from home to choose from, the choices can become overwhelming.

Each company has its own requirements, schedules, and pay rates to consider.

The good thing about having so many to choose from is you’re likely to find one that really fits your needs, from its hourly rate to its flexibility.

Requirements: Online Call Center Jobs from Home

What do you need to be a work from home call center agent? There are some important things to consider before deciding if this is the right work from home job for you. Generally, remote call center agents need:

  • A dedicated home office, free from noise and distractions
  • High-speed internet with reliable virus protection
  • Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Dedicated landline phone for work purposes only (cell phones are restricted)
  • Corded telephone headset with microphone
  • Skype for teleconferences
  • All-in-one printer
  • Dedicated e-mail account for work purposes

Of course, each company has its own set of requirements, but these are the most common requirements for call center agents.

As you can see, an at-home call center may not be a viable option for parents with young children at home, since background noise is a big problem for these jobs.

You can get around this by working an overnight shift when the kids are asleep, but that doesn’t work for everyone. Or, invest in a babysitter during the hours you work.

The most important thing to focus on is your office space. It’s imperative to have a dedicated space – like a spare bedroom – to work from.

This helps prevent background noise and distractions while you work and keeps your personal and work life separate.

If you think this type of job is perfect for you, then read on to find the perfect work from home call center job.

Spotlight: Amazon’s Work from Home Jobs

Above, I mention Amazon as one of the places you can find these virtual call center jobs.

However, Amazon virtual customer service jobs are some of the best you can get, so I wanted to spend a few minutes going more in-depth with them so that you can learn what they entail and decide if they’re right for you.

Amazon is one of the largest, most successful companies of our time.

Who wouldn’t want to work there?

And, bonus if you can work with the company from the comfort of your home.

Here’s more about working as a virtual call center agent for Amazon:

What are the Jobs?

Before Amazon’s busiest season – yep, right around the holidays – the company hires several new virtual customer service representatives to handle customer calls, complaints, questions, and more.

There are also some tech support jobs available, but the majority of the positions you’ll see are ones that focus just on customer service.

Amazon hires agents from specific states, usually those that contain an Amazon office because positions may require on-site training.

Therefore, some travel may be required up front and at other times through the year when Amazon hosts meetings or more training seminars.

The rest of the time, you can work from your home office assisting Amazon customers via phone, live chat, and email.

Who Does Amazon Hire?

Amazon is picky about who it hires, not just because it wants to uphold its reputation, but also because the jobs are very competitive.

With so many people wanting to work with Amazon, it’s necessary for the company to be a bit pickier than other companies with its applicants.

It’s necessary for every candidate to have a high school diploma or equivalent, but some college is actually preferable.

You should also have at least one year of customer service experience in a relevant role, but the more you have, the better.

Since you’ll be working from home, you’ll need to make sure that you have a separate office area that’s quiet and free from distractions.

You must be hard-working, self-motivated, and understand basic computer concepts.

It’s also beneficial to be a fast typist and understand how emails, live chats, and other programs work.

Some management roles also pop up from time to time and these will require a bachelor’s degree, minimum, and at least two years of management experience.

What Do I Need to Get Started?

Most of what you’ll need are things you’ll already have in your home office, like a reliable computer and high-speed internet connection.

You should also know your way around basic management systems, Microsoft Office, and computers in general.

Otherwise, Amazon will provide you with training materials and all the knowledge you’ll need to get started.

What’s the Scheduling Like?

Amazon’s virtual call center agents can take on either part-time or full-time roles.

Before the holiday season, Amazon does hire several part-time temporary agents to fulfill its needs during this peak period.

Amazon’s known to keep the agents with the best performances throughout the year, so if you prove yourself during this time, you could end up with a full-time, all-year role.

The company does hire throughout the year, too, but it’s not as common to find these roles.

You’ll need to be somewhat flexible with your schedule and able to work mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

During November and December, you might also be put on a 40-hour weekly schedule to handle the busy holiday rush.

Depending on the position and needs of the company at the time, shifts are usually divided into 4 10-hour shifts a week or 5 8-hour shifts a week for full-timers.

How Much Does It Pay?

Amazon pays a bit differently, reportedly, depending on the state you’re in and your exact role.

However, the average rate seems to be anywhere from $10 to $15 an hour, according to Glassdoor.

There is also potential for pay increases and bonuses based on your performance!

Another Option: Working for Yourself!

Although work-at-home call center jobs are perfect for some people, they might not fit everyone’s needs.

Some of them can have demanding schedules just like an in-office job, which may not support the needs of your family.

I wanted to offer another option for those of you who love this type of career but aren’t necessarily looking to have a set schedule or be available nights and weekends when the kids are home from school.

If that sounds like you, then I suggest considering virtual assisting.

As an at-home customer service rep, you’ll basically be a virtual assistant anyway.

Virtual assistants (or VAs) often work with private clients to answer phone calls and emails to provide customer service or tech support to their customers.

It’s actually one of the most common services they provide!

But they also do a bunch of other things, like setting appointments, completing data entry tasks, writing emails or newsletters, creating marketing materials, and so much more.

If variety is a necessity for you to stay happy with a job, then becoming a VA might be perfect for you.

Since you’ll work for yourself, you won’t have a specific schedule to follow as long as you can meet the needs of your clients.

If a client only wants you available during specific hours or days, then you can always decline working with them if it doesn’t fit your needs.

If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a VA, you can read this post that also outlines the top companies available for matching you with clients!

Conclusion: Starting Your Career as a Call Center Agent

There’s a reason that call center work is so popular.

Actually, there are several of them!

The work is usually flexible, remote-friendly, and it can change from day to day, which is great for people who don’t like doing the same exact thing all the time.

As a virtual call center agent, you’ll work from your home office helping others who call in.

It’s absolutely perfect for people who love talking to others and assisting them with their needs.

Plus, stay-at-home moms and dads might find it the perfect solution to still be able to be flexible around their family’s schedule while bringing in some extra money.

Virtual call center agents should be organized, courteous, and tech-savvy.

If that sounds like you, then you shouldn’t have trouble finding work that suits your needs and interests by using the list above.

All ready to find a work from home job as a call center agent? Great, and good luck!

It would be so much better if this was outlined to separate 1099 vs W2.
Im currently on medical direction to try to find a job working from home but it will cost me money that I dont have if I have to a 1099 position. Id rather work for a company that runs W2 wise on their payroll.
