Hemingway App–Write Like a Literary Legend

What Exactly is the Hemingway App?

Named after Ernest himself, the Hemingway app helps you improve your writing whether you write fiction or non-fiction.  The Hemingway app suggests the use of simpler diction, stronger verbs, fewer adverbs, and use of active voice and not passive voice.

You can use it to tighten up your prose or make your emails more concise and to the point.

The app is currently available only via the web and is free.  A desktop version is currently in the works, and you can sign up to be notified when it is available.  Also, the site did get nominated for a Webby award.

Currently there is no Android or iPhone app version listed although you can pull up the website as you would any website on your iPhone or Android with your browser and settings.

The app will allow you to quickly:

• see the grade-level of your writing.
• see the readability level of your writing.
• see your number of paragraphs, sentences, words, and characters.
• see your mistakes color-coded for corrections.

 

How Does the Hemingway App Work?

Simply log into the website at http://www.hemingwayapp.com and click on the Write button to the left. Type in your text, and then click on the Edit button in the same area.  You will then get an evaluation of your writing.  It is suggested that you aim for a Grade of 10 or lower for readability.

 

So How Does the Hemingway App Stand Out as Unique?

With the Hemingway app, you have it all right there on the right-hand side (at least you do if you are using Google Chrome).   The Hemingway app is a much simpler tool to use than Grammarly.  However, if you need to engage in more academic or technical writing, you might want to also use Grammarly.  Grammarly will also check your work for plagiarism while the Hemingway App will not.

In the Hemingway App, typos and misspelled words are underlined in red, but no suggested corrections are offered.  Again, Grammarly would offer suggestions.

The Hemingway app is free, while I currently pay $29.95 a month for Grammarly to get the most use.

 

What Do I Think of the Hemingway App?

I think is a nice easy tool to use for casual or business writing as well as fiction writing.  However, I would not use it for technical or academic writing.  I really do love the color coding feature.  However, with the Hemingway app or Grammarly or any of the editing or proofreading tools out there, writing will always be subjective.

 

In Conclusion…

I would say that if you need a writing tool to improve your writing and you need it to be free, this is certainly an easy, functional little tool to have.
