I have a regular work from home job that I work about 29 hours a week.  While I make enough money at this job to cover most of my bills, I do also work at other sites for extra income as well.  There are many different extra income eggs out there, and many of them have been covered in other blog posts on this site. I wanted to share my top five favorite sites I work at for extra income.

  1.  Demand Media – In addition to hiring freelance writers, Demand Media also has several roles in their titling department that they hire for:  Duplicate Checking, Titling Editing and Title Quality Assurance.  I have been doing duplicate checking for Demand Media for about four months now.  What I like best about this site is that the work is easy, and when there’s a lot of it, I can make quite a bit of extra money.  I also like the that Demand Media pays twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  •  Scribie – This is a great site for people who want to get some experience in  general transcription.  This is one of the sites I work at when there’s  no work with Demand Media.  They also pay by Paypal, and you can cash out whenever you want,  but if you cash out less than $30, there is a small fee deducted from your earnings.  This is different from Demand Media, which does not charge any fees.
  • Mturk – This site is affiliated with Amazon.com, and is a great way to earn extra money to order things on Amazon.  They have minimum payouts depending on whether you want to transfer your earnings to your bank account or to an Amazon gift card – if you transfer to your bank account, you’ll need to have a minimum balance of $10, if you transfer to an Amazon.com gift card, the minimum is only $1. I do a lot  of work on Mturk especially  around holiday times, or if I’m trying to earn extra money to get someone something for their birthday.
  • Merchantcircle: This is my favorite site for making some quick money doing freelance writing.  They provide different article topics that you can claim –  once you’ve claimed an article topic or topics (the amount of topics you can claim depends on how good your writing is) you have 72 hours to write the article and submit.  Once you submit it, an editor will review it and either approve for payment, or return it with notes on changes that need to be made. They pay is once a week on Friday by Paypal, and you have to make a minimum of $20 before you’ll be eligible for payment.
  • Yahoo Contributor Network:  This is another great site for freelance writing, especially if you want to have the freedom to write about your own topics, rather than choosing from the topics provided – though you do also have that option.  If you choose to write your own articles, you can either submit your them for upfront payment, which requires a review by an editor before an offer can be made, or you can let your articles for earnings through revenue share. You won’t make as much if you choose the revenue share option, but your articles can usually be published right away.  If you choose to write on one of the topics that Yahoo Contributor Network provides, revenue will mostly come from revenue share, though they do occasionally have some upfront payment topics. To see some of the articles I’ve written at Yahoo Contributor Network, click here.
  • Demand Studios: Demand Studios is a platform that offers freelance writing opportunities across various topics and industries. They provide clear guidelines and assignments, allowing you to showcase your writing skills and get paid for your work. It’s a great platform for writers looking to earn extra income by working on a variety of writing projects.
  • Clickworker: Clickworker is a micro-tasking platform where you can complete small online tasks such as data entry, web research, and content moderation. It provides a flexible way to earn extra income by completing tasks based on your skills and availability. The platform offers a wide range of tasks, allowing you to choose the ones that suit your interests and abilities.
  • Fiverr: Fiverr is a popular freelance marketplace where you can offer your services in various categories such as writing, graphic design, programming, and more. It provides a platform for freelancers to showcase their skills and expertise by creating gigs. Clients can then hire you for their specific projects. Fiverr offers a wide range of opportunities to earn income by leveraging your unique talents and abilities.

I hope this article has provided you with some ideas of extra income sources to check out.  For those of you who have done work on these or any other sites, I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Erica, Thanks for posting this. I have been getting nervous with the lack of titles at Demand the past few days and am using the time to look for a few more eggs to add to my basket. These are great leads and I appreciate your opinions on them. I especially like the writing ones and will be looking into those as I love to write 🙂

Hi Erica,

I live in Raleigh, your neck of the woods. This article is awesome. I am a working mother of 5 (well, 4 and a half, due in May) and am always looking for ways to earn extra cash. Since I love to read, I am a good writer, so these resources are great! Thanks!

I did not know about the Yahoo Network. I like the idea of being able to write about what I’m interested in, so that might be a good option for me. Thanks for sharing!

I keep hearing so much about Merchant Circle! I really really need to research more about them. I am so happy that people are doing OK writing for them.

I also agree that the Yahoo! Contributor Network is still a good option. It’s one of the few sites out there that will give you both upfront pay and revenue share for your content.

Are these legal sites? Because I googled several websites that offers work from home but when I registered, they required me to pay for certain amount then I thought it’s a scam because I’m looking for a home-based job. I mean, the fact that I need an income and that site is requiring me to pay for such work? In reality, if someone needs work, they should be paid by the employer but in that website, you are looking for a job but you should pay first before you can work for them. They offer good pay but it seems to good to be true. :/

Many of the things you can find by general google searches are not legit. The above list are all legit, but some of them are not hiring. I would recommend a place like Workplacelikehome.com to research home based jobs. It is a community/forum that I find very helpful! Good luck on your search!

Hi Miranda, I also found you through StumbleUpon, you have a great site! I’m trying to apply for the Pinecone Research, but it keeps telling me sorry not in my area. Can you suggest something? Thanks

Unfortunately not, I too have not been able to get in :(. I try every time they open but never qualify! I will keep trying though, they dont open very often and everyone I know that’s in the network love it. Opinion Place is another really good one that pays quickly.

You mentioned you liked to earn money from Mturk by Amazon. If you complete surveys to earn money I’ve noticed that you make a lot more with Global test market then anywhere else I’ve done them. Usually between 2.5 dollars per completed survey. They are BBB accredited. Fiver.com is also good to earn money completing tasks.

I honestly didn’t know any of these sites. I have a little site which earns me a tiny income from G ads, and then I sometimes promote it using those free article sites, but these ideas seem a lot more direct to earn an income from the same occupation of writing what we love to write about. Thanks for the ideas.

Great article!

I am currenty in a situation where I am hoping to be able to work online to be able to spend as much time with my girlfriend in the US (I’m a UK citizen) whilst still making money.
Is it feasible to make enough to live on from purely online work?
Are these all accessible to UK citizens.
Is it allowed to post articles on more than 1 website e.g. Merchantcircle and Contributor?
Also, with Demand media, you mention applying with different email addresses for different jobs – if accepted by more than 1 are you able to work on them both?
Many thanks

Nice post. I think Mturk doesn’t approve everyone. Maybe it is for specific countries.

Great read, always looking for extra ways to make some extra cash. I just wanted to share something I’ve been doing recently. I run an office and have noticed that unused toner was piling up in storage. Looked into returning but that was no good. Tried out the site http://www.tonerconnect.net/ and was impressed. They had quick service and that payout was nice.
