Do you continue on despite feeling that the odds are against you?

Are you able to handle criticism as well as praise?

When you are afraid do you still plunge past your fears?

Then you, my friend, have the greatest business skill available to you—tenacity. Hopefully, it has taught you that you are enough, and you can move past your fears.

What Exactly is Tenacity?

The Webster’s Dictionary defines tenacity as the ability to be tenacious or holding firmly, persistent or stubborn. Therefore, if you can have these characteristics, then you can actually do well when working from home.

What Does Tenacity Have to Do With Working at Home?

First of all, let me say, that over the years I have seen many people begin businesses both traditional brick and mortar as well as home businesses. Then I would see these same people begin to crumble over the least amount of criticism or one negative experience. They would give up when all of their work at home (WAH) projects dried up. Or they would quit when they couldn’t stand the fear, pain or uncertainty of being self-employed and working at home.

Sometimes in business, tenacity really is the greatest skill of all. It teaches you to keep on despite criticism, discouragement, blame, financial hardship, and sacrifice. If you really believe in what you are doing, you will persist and get what you want.

When the money runs out or when people say you are good enough, you will know the truth. You will know that you are unique in who you are and what you offer.

Is Tenacity Just About Being Stubborn?

Tenacity is not just about being stubborn. It is about being so passionately in love with your dream and being so driven by the desire to fulfill it that nothing gets in your way. Absolutely nothing gets in your way.

What Are Examples in Real Life of Tenacity?

Well, we have all heard about Thomas Edison. He was a real-life example of someone who was tenacious. The light bulb had actually been around for a number of years—it just wasn’t a reliable, inexpensive source of light. It needed a serious makeover. Edison tried 1,000 times to get his version of the light bulb to work. He knew he was on to something—even something that had been around and wasn’t working that well—so he never gave up trying to make it work.

Suzanne Evans, a coach at Help More People, says that tenacity is the most important business skill in comparison to all other skills. Everything else just paves the way.

How Can I Use Tenacity in My WAH and Personal Life?

Tenacity can be used in your WAH life when you are trying to find enough work-at-home business opportunities or clients to sustain a living. You refused to give up even when you have had quite a few work-at-home companies that did not work out. However, you understand your work ethic and skills set and know that there is a company out there somewhere that will appreciate you.

Your personal life can be the same way. You know that you are a person of worth and deserve to be treated like a person of worth.

How Do I Practice Tenacity?

The best way to practice tenacity is to believe in yourself and what you are doing. Have a doggedness about yourself that says I want this and will not stop until I get this. I know I was made for this, and no one is going to tell me that I am not enough or deserving of this.

Realize that not everyone will like you or what you offer, but there are clients and WAH companies for those other folks too. You are with the ones that do like what you offer and the difference that only you can make in their business and bottom line.

Do Tenacity and Self-Motivation Go Together?

While self-motivated people are able to get themselves excited or encouraged to begin work every day, tenacious people are not only self-motivated but also so passionate about what they are doing that they will stop at nothing. Whereas a self-motivated person may lose motivation, when the money runs out or when there are too many obstacles. Self-motivated people can work without someone looking over their shoulder, but are not always as doggedly passionate about continuing as a tenacious person.

How Can I Be Sure That I Am Tenacious And Not Just Unrealistic?

Again, do you know that you are good at what you are being tenacious about? Is it a talent or skill or business idea that you know (not just think) that you are good doing? Have you also had skill assessments or testing to prove your talent or skill? Have you ever taken a Myers Briggs Test to assess your strength and weaknesses?

How Do I Explain These New Found Changes to Family, Friends, and Clients?

Unless they really “get” what you want to fulfill in your life, don’t share too much. Not everyone has the resilience to bounce back time and time again and remain passionate. Not everyone can continue year after year without giving up hope.

In Conclusion

Become tenacious when the money runs out, when the car dies, when clients leave, when WAH businesses go under, and when you don’t have an income. Be the type of person who knows what they want and eventually will win it over into their lives.

I absolutely love working from home, and you’re right – it does require a lot of tenacity to get there. You must be prepared to work really hard for little or no financial reward for several months at least. However if you REALLY want it, then you will get there.

Absolutely, Jon. Very well stated. Thanks for the comment.

I think when people hear work from home they think this will be a cake walk. They fail to plan and they just jump right in having no clue what they are doing. It always looks easy and effortless when you see the fruits of someones labor. I’ve been working from home as a customer service rep. I would like to start up my own VA business. however I do not know enough about it. I’m taking time to research and see where my niche is and develop that skill and others to make myself marketable. It’s taking time and I’m willing to invest that time.

Speaking of Myers Briggs testing mine was so on point it was scary. There is the group of people that feel like they can do anything their friends or neighbors do not understanding some things in life take a certain type of person to work them and handle the job effectively and efficiently. They don’t know themselves well enough to know what to do thus causing much unnecessary pain.

Excellent post

Right on TeaJae! Totally agree. Just like figure skating, it looks “easy” when done by a pro. However, it took sometimes 10 to 15 years of day-in-and-day-out practice to get it that way.

Glad you liked the article too.

My blog is a month and a half old and I needed this article today. I am very tenacious, but it can be so discouraging in the beginning. I just keep reminding myself that the only difference between me and successful bloggers is that they kept going. They didn’t get bored or overwhelmed and give up. I’m going to share this today. Thanks!

I’ve heard tenacity defined as: “stick-to-it-iveness”

It definitely takes tenacity to be a work at home mom or business owner of any kind. It’s really easy to get distracted or discouraged, but you really have to hold on and keep working at it even when its hard.

That is exactly true. If you give up then all the hard work is for nothing. Gotta fight through the difficult times.
