Titling at Demand Media

Updated on: by Amy Kennedy

There has been a huge amount of interest in the Titling jobs at Demand Media. It does not come as a surprise considering it is rated as my personal favorite non-phone, non-technical, flexible, high paying and quick paying jobs! I am so glad so many of the readers have found their way into titling at Demand Media and now so many others are asking me “How do I apply?” I feel it is important to make a one-time explanation of titling with clear instructions for applying as well as my tips for being offered a chance to test into Demand Media Titling.

What is Demand Media?
Demand Media is an online content writing company. What that means is any website or company who need articles written for their site can turn to Demand Media for content that matches their subject. Some of the common websites that use Demand Media as a source of material is Livestrong.com, Tyra Bank’s Beauty and Fashion, eHow.com as well as many others. Demand Media is one of the leading online content generating companies.

What is Titling?
The process of titling is very interesting. Before Demand Media’s writers ever begin to write an article a title for it is made. Demand purchases search engine queries from top search engines such as Google.   These searches are then sent through the titling process to determine if they would make quality articles and are usually edited to be turned into a quality titles without spelling or grammatical errors.

From my understanding, a title, or search query, makes its first stop at Title Quality Assurance, also known as TQA. This is where I personally work. We determine, based on a set of guidelines given to us by Demand Media, if the query is already good enough to be a fitting title, if it needs some editing before making it as a title or the query is rejected as not being a fit for Demand Media. This is a simple job but instructions and guidelines are not always black and white. However, the people working in TQA are very easy to work with and always ready to explain or answer questions.

When titles are determined in TQA to need editing, the query is then sent to the Title Editing department, abbreviated as TE. Many people say this is the most difficult of the titling jobs but many are happy to be there still. The name of this job is pretty self-explanatory. The editors simple make any corrections necessary to turn the search query into a usable title. What makes this so difficult for the editors however is following a set of rules or guidelines that limits how or what an editor can really do. Sometimes they have a difficult task doing the impossible with queries that really should have been rejected in the first place.

I am not completely sure how accurate I am in this, but I believe the titles that are edited are then sent back through TQA until they are either rejected or accepted. The accepted titles are possibly then sent to Duplicate Check, which is where a lot of the readers of WAH adventures have found themselves. This is a pretty good gig and many people really enjoy it once they get the hang of it. Duplicate Checkers are depended on to ensure similar articles are not written over and again. Those working in Dupe are given the title as well as several others that are deemed similar. If the checker determines that the first title would produce nearly the same article as any of the others listed the title is rejected, otherwise the title continues down the Demand Media factory line.

One of the final stops on the Titling line is Title Selector. These workers choose titles that are appropriate for each site contracted to Demand Media. For instance, a Livestrong.com Title Selector would ensure the articles chosen are fitting for the style and subject matter needed at Livestrong. Additional job titles that I am not well versed with and do not even know if they still exist are Category Quality Assurance and Category Editor as well as Keyword Quality Assurance. More about all of these job types with explanation of their duties can be found on the Demand Media website.

All About the Pay at Demand Media
Each of the titling roles at Demand Media pay per titles.
Title Quality Assurance- 2 cents per title
Title Editing- 4 cents
Title Selection- 2 cents
Duplicate Check- 2 cents

The pay is based on the average speed one can move through the titles. While the rates seems extremely low you may be surprised how much people make per hour! I can speak only for myself, but in TQA I average around $18 an hour. Some average much higher some people much less. It seems a lot of people in Duplicate Check average $10-15 per hour but Title Editing people often average the least as editing titles can take more time. Although their pay per title is the highest many seem to average $8-10/ hour.

Demand Media pays twice a week! There is no cash out threshold. Every Tuesday Demand Media titlers receive a paypal deposit for the work they completed the previous Thursday through Sunday. Every Friday we receive a deposit for the work done from Monday to Wednesday! This twice-a-week pay comes in very very handy when money is tight or sudden unexpected expenses come up!

How Flexible is Demand Media?
As of right now, none of the roles have a required amount of work to complete except to be active within a 30 day period. So, I can choose not to work when I do not want to, when I want to work, how much I want to work. If I wanted to sit on the computer for a straight 20 hours and work I could, given there are titles available. If I wanted to not work at all for three week I can.
Once you log into working at Demand Media you can stop whenever you want. I have two small children. I can stop at the drop of a hat and it not effect me or my work whatsoever! This is THE BEST work at home job to have when you are caring for children! I cannot express this enough!

What Skills Do I Need to Work as a Titler?
There is no set skill level. You simply need to be able to follow directions and use common sense. This is a simple job that does not require you to submit a resume or even have a high school diploma.

Can I Work More Than One Titling Job?
The simple answer would be NO. Generally we can only work one role at a time. However, Demand has made a few exceptions here and there when the work load gets very high. Often people are given privileges to work a second titling job to help out from time to time. But the official word is that usually we cannot work more than one role.

How Can I Apply for Titling at Demand Media?
Applying is as simple as sending an email to [email protected]. pan>
I do have some tips based on the information I have gathered from fellow applicants about how to ensure you are offered a chance to test into at least one of the roles.
Send a separate email for each of the titling jobs, each from a different email address! Be sure to address each subject line with the titling role you are applying for (Title Quality Assurance or Duplicate Check…). Give a quick and brief request for the position within the body of the email. Then, be patient. While some of you will be lucky and apply right when they are needing more titlers, some will apply just after a hiring spree and will be stuck waiting for possibly months.

What is The Hiring Process Like?
After you have applied you may eventually receive an email letting you know of their need to fill positions in whichever titling role is needed. Demand Media will attach a set of guidelines to read over and a link for a test to measure your ability to follow the directions in the guidelines. It is suggested to have the guidelines open. Many of the sample questions in the test will be very similar to the examples given in the guidelines! The test is NOT timed but can only be completed once.
After you have submitted your test be sure to follow any other instructions given in the email.

If you test high enough and they still have openings left, you will receive a Welcome email with instructions for signing in and getting started! I would suggest first visiting the forums at Demand Media for some guidance. Then, get to work! Just take it easy your first couple of week, learn what they are expecting of you and then, as you get the hang of it, your average hourly rate will steadily increase!!

I really love titling so far! I was writing too much before and it was frying my brain. The titling is the perfect opportunity to write a little less and still earn as much. If there are days when I don't feel like writing a lot, I can still make $$ with the titling.

I don't think I will ever be able to get over the 'high' of working for Demand as a Titler! It is amazing!

I love Demand and getting paid twice a week. This is an egg I hope to keep for sure as long as I can.

What a great explanation. I had wrongly thought this involved actually writing the titles. That was always a challenge for me under the old WCP program. Coming up with unique titles with the right SEO got to be hard for my own articles. I could not imagine doing it for a living. This makes sense now.

Does anyone know how long it takes a paypal payment from DS to process? Mine says "in process" on the payment status column. This is my first payment from them.

Mine usually processes in the evenings around 7pm Eastern every Friday and Tuesday. If you had made any money between last Monday through Wednesday, you should have seen a deposit today already.

Great Bailey! I am so glad it made sense. I was worried it would be hard to follow. The whole process is like an assembly line with the finished product of an informative article. I think Henry Ford would be proud!

New follower. What a great post. I had no idea things like this existed. I am going to be making the transition to a stay at home mom this summer, and have been very anxious about income. I'm glad I came across your site!

Can you recommend what I should write in the email other than the title of the position???

WAH Adventures!

A simple "I am interested in the titling position at Demand Media. I would appreciate an opportunity to test in whenever you have an available opening. Thank You." should do the job Lily.

I just got hired for TQA, I’m anxious but nervous to get started. I think it will be best to wait until my two year old is in bed. Do you happen to know how long the probationary period lasts where they only want you to do about $4.00 per day? Thanks for all of the tips!

No, I do not know how long it takes. Somewhere off within a few days and some are still waiting a couple of weeks later. I believe it is just one guy doing each and every person’s review, so it is taking him a while in addition to all of his other duties. But he did mention in the forums that he does not expect you to work every day and he is pretty flexible about it all. Hopefully this response is not needed and you are already off probation! 😉 Good luck and welcome to TQA!

I’m still waiting to get a response. Starting to not be so optimistic since I have noticed so many people have heard back. Also re-thinking some of my answers to the test. Oh well the waiting game continues I guess. Sounds like such a great opportunity, I would love to be able to do this. I will keep on stalking my email. Lol

I am new to reading your blog and love it so far!! My husband and I would both like to do this opportunity. Can two people from the same household be hired?

Absolutely! Many spouses each have their own account titling at Demand and do it at the same time! Best of luck to you both!!

new to WAHs and was wondering where to find the email link for Demand? The site asks you to submit an applicaton, a resume and doesn’t list titler in available positions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

If you request to test will they send you information for any position that is open, or would you need to send a new email for each position? Can you apply for more than one job at a time?

Miranda Grimm

July 28, 2011 at 8:53 pm

I am not completely clear on this. I *think that if you send an email expressing interest in titling in general, that you might be emailed when the next available role opens. But I will tell you from my experience that I did just that and then also emailed from a different address requesting TQA. The only one I hear back from was the one where I requested TQA…. But it may have just been one of those glitch type of things.

If you choose to apply to all the roles, be sure to use different emails.

Hello. I’ve been lurking around on your site for a few days now. I’m impressed! You have so much information that truly does wonders for those of us desperately searching for work. Thank you so much for this, it gives me a newly found hope.

I’ve been out of a j-o-b for two years now. Every application/resume that I sent out, only results in a rejection letter. I am exactly a half of a month away from shutting my internet down due to the lack of money (this is the only type of modern technology that I actually have, lol). I’m aware that this is not interesting and seems like a “woe is me” story. Frankly, it’s a bit embarrassing for me. But, my point is to show you that what you’re doing is of true value to me and so many others. I’ve been in a panic mode for quite some time now, and stress is a daily occurrence.

I just sent an email out to Demand Studios. I am very nervous, yet excited at the same time. Cross your fingers for me please. Just the possibility of being accepted allows me to smile today. This is all thanks to you, for opening a door that I didn’t know existed.

Thank you again for all of your hard work. This is a blessing!

I guess I should have read your homepage first lol (about DS drying up). Either way, my previous post still stands. I’m very thankful for this site.

I am sorry about DS Drying up. They are making changes and a lot of people are still hoping for new and more jobs there.

Check this out as well, I hear a lot of people are doing about 150 a week with it, some may be doing more. I heard they have been accepting people left and right, so jump in quick if you want to try it out: http://hire.jobvite.com/CompanyJobs/Careers.aspx?c=qXY9VfwJ&cs=93q9Vfwh&su=fsY9Vfwe&page=Job%20Description&j=onOuVfwk

Hello Miranda. Thank you for your reply. Please don’t be sorry, you have given me a lot of opportunities as well as the much needed hope!

I checked into the link that you provided. I took your advice and jumped on it; sent a resume and cover letter. If you’re curious, the resume is required, but not the cover letter. They ask you two questions on the application (besides the standard Name, Address, etc.): “What do you look for in a company?” and “What would your theme song be when you walked into a room?” I’m not sure if you have already looked into it or not, so this is just a heads up. I will be notified by email if accepted or declined. There is also a link sent, via email, to check the progress of your application. If accepted, I will inform you of the process thereafter.

Thank you so much for the lead and luck.

P.S. – I have looked into other work-at-home websites, this one is the best by far. Not only do you have a mass of options, but you also include your own experiences; this is priceless as it makes me feel much more comfortable with applying.

Thanks again and good luck to you as well!
