U-Haul- Great Benefits!

Updated on: by Amy Kennedy
To kick off our month of Work-at-Home Jobs with benefits I am reviewing the home based positions at U-Haul and the many advantages even part-time workers see with the extensive benefits package!
U-Haul, as most people know, is a company that rents trucks and moving products. They are a highly respected and well-known company in the United States and Canada.

What Types of Home Based Jobs Are Offered by U-Haul?

U-Haul provides home based call center jobs in their sales, emergency hotline and the reservation department. As with all home based call center work, this requires a silent background during your working hours. Home based agents answer calls from general callers who have questions, need roadside assistance or would like to place a reservation for a U-Haul product.

Is The Training Online?

Yes, the training is done from home and based on the feedback of someone who recently went through the training, the process is broken down into sections. The first week consists of 15 hours of online training, the following two weeks include 25 hours and the fourth week is when agents are able to begin their position with someone shadowing them remotely to assist with any questions. After training is complete agents are shadowed once a week to ensure proper handling of calls and that all issues are addressed if there are any lingering questions from the agents.
Training is paid by the hour based on your state’s minimum wage. Additionally, at the end of training there is a $50 bonus.

How Flexible is The Schedule?

U-Haul claims to have a flexible schedule. I have read online agents are able to report their availablilty and U-Haul creates a schedule based on their needs and your ability to be available to work. There are different shifts available and their emergency roadside service departments is open 24/7 for you night owls!

How is The Pay at U-Haul?

U-Haul recruiters have reported that the average agent makes $12-14 per hour. The pay is based on minimum wage plus bonuses. The bonuses in the reservation department include things like the caller actually reserving a truck, adding products like a dolly or boxes and so forth.

Does U-Haul Hire Agents as Employees or Independent Contractors?

U-Haul hires employees and this means they will hold taxes out and you are guaranteed to always make at least minimum wage, no matter the call volume.

My understanding, after speaking with a U-Haul agent, is many people are hired in as seasonal contract workers and some are then offered a permanent position. It is important to not that only permanent employees receive benefits.

What Benefits Are Offered?

My understanding is that any employee of U-Haul is offered the appropriate benefits package (based on either full or part time status) after only three months of employment! This chart from the U-Haul site sums up the benefits offered:

Company Benefits Full-time Part-time
Medical plan
Dental plan
Limited-care medical plan
Life insurance
Travel insurance
401(k) savings plan
Stock ownership plan
Educational assistance
U-Haul discounts
Paid holidays
Paid vacations
Credit union

How Do I Apply?

To become a part of the U-Haul team visit their careers page and look for listings with “WFH” in the title (Work From Home) or any ‘telecommute’ jobs.

My husband currently works for Uhaul, at a retail store. I want to add that they are offered $50 reimbursement of their health expenses. The eye care is a discount card. They do offer dental insurance.

Over the last few years I have heard really good things about working for the U-Haul customer service line.

Thanks for adding that info Rona! I feel like anyone who can handle doing phone work, is ready to make a full time career working from home and needs a decent pay matched with benefits…THIS is the ideal job!

I WORK FOR UHAUL FROM HOME…. i want to clarify some things– the bonus is $50 PER COMPLETED WEEK OF TRAINING. So a total of $200 if you complete all 4 weeks.

Also, you are hired as a temp – you May Not get the permanent position. As a temp – YOU DO NOT GET BENEFITS. If they keep you on after, then you would get benefits.

I just applied! *fingers crossed*
I currently work a full time position as a Technician at an eye doctor's office but it just isn't something that is jiving with me.
I would love to work at home and enjoy the freedom it comes with it! And also my schooling would be a lot easier to handle!
Thanks for posting this! Love your site!

I received a call today and participated in an online interview.
There are a couple things holding me back – the lady I spoke with sounded young and you could tell she was bombarded with a lot of things. It just made me feel uneasy and reminded me of a past job experience I had.
Also, I am scared to give up my full time position I currently have… I mean, this position offered by Uhaul is going until September 2011…
Plus I will be attending college in the summer and fall and I still don't know if that would be okay or not. I am assuming because Nicole (the lady on the phone) told me I was allowed a max of two days off and my classes are only two days.

I don't know what to do! Any advice?
It would be an easy decision if I was still unemployed lol

Katie, did Nicole make it sound like it was going to be a permenant job or just until Sept.? Do you that there is potential to make more than minimum wage?

Thank you!

Can anyone tell me if the positions are temporary only.

WAH Adventures!

May 3, 2011 at 11:09 pm

^^^ My understanding is that this job is seasonal until September but has the potential to become full time. I spoke to someone who told me during her interview with UHaul that they decided to go ahead and offer her a permanent position. But usually you are hired temporarily with the possibility of permanent.

Hi, I am currently training for the reservations position. I am in the second week, and so far, it seems pretty good. You do get $50 on top of your pay every week that you complete training. I got a permanent position. The lady I did the interview asked me if I would be available after September, or if I wanted a temporary position. So in my case, I was givin a choice, which also gave me a small hourly raise, plus the benefits. I like it so far, and it is the best thing I have found since it is a real job. No selling, and no pressure to sell. Just reservations.

Hi, I will start training on june 20th as an reservation position. Any heads up on what the training is like? I also was told that you have to score at least 80% on the test at the end of the week. How is it going for you so far? Please let me know thanks.

June 18, 2011 at 11:48 pm

I have completed week one of training this week. One is required to train online for 3 5 hour shifts on week one and pass a final exam with a score of 80% or higher to continue. On week one you also have to complete 7 differrent assigned training modules on your own time (which you punch in for and are paid for this time as well). There is a lot of information covered during this time and we had a great instructor. The test is open book/open notes. He will review information a lot of the time and make sure you take notes as he emphasizes areas covered in the final exam. You must also download a lot of software during the week as well. We were told that next week which is Week 2 for me that we will be broken up into smaller groups of like 4 per group and start learning how to use their phone system that you will be using on your computer and even taking some of our first calls. Just relax and pay attention in class, take notes and ask questions, get your required modules in UHaul University done and take the practice quizes presented in them along the way. For the next two weeks of training it is Monday – Friday for 5 hours each day during your selected time slot. UHaul seems like a great company that has their act together and treat their employees very well. I’m very excited about this work at home opportunity. They do require everyone to commit to working one weekend day with a shift of up to 10.5 hours and some other scheduling resrictions such as being required to work Holidays as those are very busy days for reservations. Good luck and enjoy the opportunity.

hey UHAULANNON thanks for the information now i just wanted to know can you or anyone who works for uhaul at home know for sure, do you only have to work 1 weekend a month or is it every week? the reason i ask is because i only have visitation of my kids on the weekends and some holidays and i have to drive 7 hours round trip just to pick them up then another 7 hours round trip to drop them off at their moms, so you can see why this would be an important question to ask since i dont want to apply and waste everyones time only to find out i wont be able to see my kids lol because i cant say that will fly to well since i already have a job, BUT want something better that does not involve upselling people to death ( WEST AT HOME DR dept. ) only good thing west at home has is the chance to work the hours i want when i want but i do feel its time for a change after working for them 4 years with no bennefits and low pay for the tedious upsells work i do, once again thanks and if you can provide details in depth would be great or if you can point me to another company with no upsells OR ATLEAST decent pay feel free to email me [email protected] and thanks to person for making this post possible

Hi Oscar JR: What we were told is that 1 weekend day per week is required as well as all Holidays. Does that mean they will schedule you for all? That remains to be seen for me as I just had my Week 2 Day 1 Training Today. Week one training was Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. You have the option of choosing your training times as follows for week 1: 7am-12pm, 12pm-5pm or 5pm-10pm. Options for Week 2 Training time as follows: Monday-Friday 6am-11am, 11:30am-4:30pm or 5-10pm. Week 3 will follow the same timeframe that you chose for week 2. You must pick one time for the entire week. You will choose these times at your 2nd Interview/Orientation. They do have a job board of sorts so to speak where people list shifts they need coverage for and shifts they are willing to pick up. As I previously stated, I am still in training myself so I am not sure how this all works once you have completed training. I do know you can not be absent for any of your training. Once training is complete I would assume things are more flexible and would think you would be able to find someone to pick up your one weekend day once a month but can’t guarantee that. So far I think U Haul to be a great company and so many people I have encountered and spoken with love working for Uhaul and have started in Sales and Reservations and then been promoted from there. It seems they promote from within. Lots of different positions allow individuals to work from home some of the time or all of the time if you so choose. That being said, I think we all have to start at the bottom and see how the fit is for you as well as them and see where it leads. I think in this economy there will always be someone looking to pick up shifts whenever possible, but what U-Haul would think of this, I can not say. I suggest you apply and at your scheduled first interview, see what they say about your situation. I would think they would tell you if you can’t find coverage YOU have to work it yourself, but don’t quote me. The interviewers were all very nice and the one I interviewed with started out in Sales and Reservations just like us. Only you can decide what will and will not work for you. It does sound as though you are ready for a change. Good luck in whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck.

I do work for uhaul in sales and reservations at home. THEY are the MOST MICRO MANAGED job that I have ever worked for. As far as flexibiltiy, that is a joke. You are required to put in at least 32 hours a week, but you cant work past 7pm (except occasionally in the busy season) and they try to make you work 39 hours a week, but you cant work 40, (1 more hour) because then that puts in to being full time and of course they dont want to pay the benefits. You have to make at least 4 resrvations an hour to get any extra credit for that. And you get your bonuses if you go according to the phone script. That sometimes is easier said than done. If a cust says they just want a quote, you ARE REQUIRED to ask their name and info anyway and you are reqired to ask the cust twice if they want a truck. If you dont, they they warn you and if you do it again, they you can lose your bonus. In the slow season, you can only work about 15 hours a week, so if this is your main source of income, then you might want to look somewhere else. why am I still there? Well I am currently looking for something else, and I wanted to give it a fair shake before moving on. its the worst job i’ve ever worked at!

Angee,

I have worked as a Go U-Haul Sales and Reservations Agent for almost 3 months now and I must say that some of your statements are very misleading. I, in fact, LOVE the job and have a very flexible schedule and am off every Monday and Saturday. You get to chose your two off days a week before being hired which I think is great. I am not micro managed AT ALL on my team. My manager is very nice, helpful, and has already emailed and called me over the VoIP system to tell me what a pleasure it was to have me on the team. I work past 7pm ALL of the time…I’ve worked until 8pm-midnight EST on several Sunday nights. They schedule you based on your time zone also so times can vary. Also, on my team we are required to make 1 reservation per hour and we get $3.40/hr for each reservation after that. We also get commission if we sale any add ons like dollys or furniture pads. The hours do vary, yes, and you can be scheduled anywhere from 15-37 hours/week as it is based on call volume. In the Summer my manager has told me that I will be working 40/50 hours and will get paid overtime. I have rarely worked less than 29/32 hours a week as you can pick up shifts very easily and their scheduling system is very user friendly. Requesting time off is also a breeze. As long as you can read a script the job is a piece of cake. I have been making anywhere from $200-$350 extra in bonus pay on top of my 8.25 hourly rate. Yes. the pay is low, but you have the potential to make around $11-$13 an hour if you stick to the script and are a good speaker which is required for any customer related job. It is all soft sales and you don’t make any outbound calls–all inbound which is great! The product sales itself…people call you, ask for a truck or trailer, enter their info, read the script, offer the rate, if they say no, offer it again, and as long as you give them a valid reason as to why they should reserve now with a credit/debit card, you’ve done your job. If they still say no, move on to the next customer and your job is done. They don’t get charged to reserve either. The card is only used to secure the reservation and most customers are fine with that. It’s a very repetitive job, yes, but fairly simple. If you can read a script, type well, and speak clearly then it’s a breeze. There are only a few jobs out there that offer such a great work from home job and you don’t have to have a land line! All you have to purchase is a head set. ($15 from Wal-Mart!) All the programs are downloaded into your computer and as long as you have high speed internet you are good. I will admit that there system can be slow at times and also faulty but that’s what the troubleshooting department is for. Will you get rich off this job? Probably not but in this economy its a job and one that can support you. I am blessed to have it and I recommend this job to anyone who hates commuting such as myself! You can apply directly online at http://www.uhaul.com. Very easy application and the HR department is very helpful.

Angee, I’m sorry for your bad experience but it may just be the team that you are on. Not sure how many jobs you have had but I can think of plenty of other jobs that could be much, much worse. Definitely not the worst job I’ve ever had. It’s a steady pay check and the benefits they offer are some of the best I’ve ever seen! They offer medical, dental, 401k, etc for part timers and their medical insurance is only $13/moth for a single person! They also have a few employee perks such as Ford/Chevrolet car discounts! Also, you can be promoted to full time after a year of work I think. One of my co workers on my team is full time and she works M-F off Sat and Sun which is what I’m shooting for/

I highly recommend this job to anyone who is in a bind and needs work fast!

Don’t do it. It sounds good but in reality is a horrible job. You really can’t pick your own hours. In an 8 hour day you don’t get a lunchtime just 2 fifteen minute breaks. When you sign up you’re told you’ll be paid by the hour and by the reservation and that you only need to make 1.9 reservations per hour to make your bonus, then after you’re trained they tell you you have to make 3 reservations an hour to make bonus. Every word you say is recorded and listened to and credit card numbers have to be collected for reservations and if you don’t ask twice for the credit card information on just one call then you don’t get your bonus for the 2 week pay period. You have to collect the name and phone number of people who want want to know uhaul rates before you can tell them anything and if you don’t collect the name and phone number even on people who only want quotes then you lose your bonus. You have no time for your family because you can’t get up and check on the baby or go to the bathroom because there’s a strict policy of staying on the phone. You’re expected to just go to the bathroom twice a day during your break. There are no limited medical benefits for part time. One week you’ll be scheduled for 5 hours total and then another week you’ll be scheduled for 49 hours and there’s nothing you can do about it. You are only allowed to change the hours you are available to work every 3 months, so you can’t make changes if you have a sick child or a family problem or just need time off. The training doesn’t teach you what you need to know to help customers and three quarters of the time you won’t be taking reservation calls you’ll be taking customer service calls even tho you don’t get paid customer service wages. By giving the reservation people the customer service calls they make the reservation percentages low so the agent can’t earn a bonus. Bottom line, don’t work for uhaul. They work you until you drop.

Wow it is amazing to hear the variables in the opinions of those who work for the same company! Well, for me I’m still at it with Uhaul and must say that my experience all this time later has been mostly positive. I don’t understand all of the scheduling fuss and nonsense expressed on here regarding schedules and scheduling as it is very easy to give away any shifts your not able or wanting as there is always someone looking to pick up extra hours and shifts. What everyone needs to remember is that Uhaul is a real company with real expectations and needs that have to be met and as such is reasonable in expectations that their employees are dedicated and committed to treating an at home job as a REAL job, with REAL expectations placed upon them, just as any other job would. While I am sure Uhaul isn’t for everyone, I find them to be a reputable company who like any other employer, set reasonable expectations of their employees. Follow the procedures set in place for the job you were hired to do, and there will be no problems.

I’ve been with UHaul for over 2 years now. I started as a temp, but they kept me on and I’m now part time. There is medical and dental coverage for part time employees. I work from Arizona, here it’s minimum wage plus $2.55 per peice of equipment I reserve. I easily make $16 an hour and always $19-$21 during the end of the month when most people move.

I feel that UHaul is very flexible in regards to scheduling. You choose your own hours. I’ve never requested a day off and it be denied. In fact, my attendance has been less than perfect and they have been pretty relaxed about it.

To those complaining about having to ask for a customers info before giving rates, or being required to ask to reserve with a card twice, why are you complaining? If you stick to the script, the whole call goes smoother and asking to reserve twice benefits you! I can usually get a customer who initially declines to reserve by saying, “There is no charge to reserve, you can cancel at no charge; all you’re doing is locking in this rate and guaranteeing a truck. Did you want to reserve with your card just to ensure this truck will be there for you?” It’s easy!

Just because you’re working from home don’t think you can have your crying kids in the background. A user above complained about not being able to check on their baby. Sorry but this is a REAL job, working for a REAL company and it requires professionalism. That being said I love it. Where else can you work in sweats and a tank while making $20 an hour? And from the comfort of your own home? I love this job!

I really want to work for UHaul at home. I know you are required to work all holidays, but I have to work July 4th at another job. If I scheduled my training at UHaul so that July 4th fell during my 4th week of training, would UHaul make me work July 4th during my 4th week of training? How can I avoid having to work on July 4th?

Also, if I tell them I want Sat. and Thursdays off, would they still make me work a holiday if it falls on a Sat. or Thursday? Thanks.

Jonah

May 8, 2013 at 12:05 am

If you always have Saturday’s off and Christmas falls on a Saturday, they will still schedule you on Christmas. Holidays are exceptions to your days off. However, when you work on holidays you ALWAYS get told to log off early because call volume is low. Also, you don’t work EVERY holiday. If you worked Memorial Day, they will give you 4th of July off. If you worked Thanksgiving, they will give you Christmas off, ect.

You cannot miss a day of training. I would suggest calling off for your other job.

It took about 1 month from the time that I filled out my application to the time I started part-time temporary work from home in April for training in reservations…after 4 months, it has been great. You cannot miss a day of training or you do the entire week over. You do get paid $200 at the end of training. The hours are very flexible and complimentary to a student/retiree/work at home parent. The phone calls can be non-stop so if you don’t like talking, look elsewhere. The good thing, the phone calls are what allow you to make your bonus. More calls = More Money! The opportunity to make decent money with no expenses is great (gas/clothes/lunches). My manager does not contact me unless 1) I contact him first 2) He is trying to help other team members find coverage for a shift 3) To just say hello 4) to give updates on policies…Now, I haven’t been counselled for anything yet so I’m sure he would contact me if he needed to. So long as you meet your talk time quota (reservations per hour) – you make your bonus for that week (I have never missed bonus). I average 25-30 hrs per week, 40-45 the last week of the month. Yes you have to work one weekend day-every weekend (it’s your choice which day) but that day is permanent so choose wisely…but you are going to work every weekend (just like every other worker including your manager) nobody is special. Hourly average of $15-$20 per hour per week is (easily attainable is the $14-$15 range (above $15 and you are cranking out reservations)) possible and anything below $14 would mean you were barely making quota. I have been selected to stay on past the temporary cutoff date and I absolutely will stay with U-Haul…part time pay is great, part time benefits are great (I’m retired so I don’t need full time), trainers have been respectful and managers have been kind and respectful (my senior agent is 19 and she will be a wonderful leader one day). I searched for a long time before taking my first work from home job for fear of scams and I must say this position is well worth it.

I also work for Uhaul Center Sales from home, and I really love the job! However, I have found that not sticking to the script has cost me my commission on more than one occassion. We are told not to let customers know that we are not at the store. So it is challenging sometimes to stick to the script when customers are not just calling to pay on a storage unit or rent a truck. The calls are monitored, and my monitor calls lately always seem to be during a “weird” call, so I have lost my bonus about 5 times. Which really really stinks, because then I’m only get paid minimum wage. Other than that, I can’t complain. The schedule is great; swapping shifts with others is super easy, communicating over instant message is great, and I often get the whole weekend off, particularly after a busy end of the month. I would recommend the job to anyone, but I would advise against being yourself, and I would say it’s best to stick to the script above all!

Ellie

October 13, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Center sales is so much harder than Go Uhaul. Lots more you have to know and do. Plus, Go Uhaul agents make more reservations than center sales because people mostly call GoUhaul to get rates, not, ” Did I leave my ____ in the truck? How late are you open? Ect…” When they put me into Center sales due to call volume I cry.

People interested in this job: DON’T APPLY FOR CENTER SALES! Go UHaul is where it’s at!

Oh and also the company benefits… you are eligible as a permanent part-time employee, but you must enroll *BEFORE* the 60 days has lapsed and not after! I had misunderstood this as well and had to wait until the new year to enroll.

I have been working at Uhaul for about 2 years now, so I figured I would throw in my 2 cents. Scheduling is awful. Although 40-50 hour weeks weren’t uncommon in the summer 3 or 4 years ago, according to my coworkers, it rarely hit 40 this year. It’s fluctuating between a 10-30hr/wk average, with winter being on the low end of that. Scheduling is awful and, for the most part, picking up extra shifts or swapping shifts for more/better hours is no longer allowed. You can, but there are so many restrictions it’s difficult to do so.

All told, after cash bonuses and taxes, I’m making about what somebody making minimum wage 40 hours a week would get. It’s not bad for somebody who just needs a little extra money to get by, but it isn’t really a good fit for someone who actually NEEDS the money to live off of. If you want/need health benefits, look elsewhere.

Is it hard to get on working from home and on application is it okay to mark hours that are best for you or does that actually hurt you like example if it says job hours are 4am-5pm and you mark good hours for you are 4am-2pm..Just wondering if that knocks you out of running and how long is the application process after you submit app online?

Hi Michelle,
I applied January 28,2014. My interview will be February 7,2014. I put that I wanted to work 8-5pm daily on the app. So to answer your question I don’t think it really matters. If i am not mistaken it stated on the app that it would not matter. I am so excited I hope i get the job. God Bless.

I sent in my application about a week ago. Is it ok to call or send an email to the hiring manager to ask for an interview?

For those who have had the phone interview, what type of questions do they ask you? and it is long? Thank you to all who responds.

I just had my phone interview yesterday for a temp sales position w/ the possibility of being given a permanent position (my interviewer said that he “felt strongly that I would be an excellent candidate and was strongly recommending me for a position”) and the questions he asked were so simple. Basic computer/internet understand like how to take a screen shot on your comp, where is a URL located, what browser you use. Really easy things. He asked about noise/disruption problems where you’ll be working. You have to be hardwired into the computer, you can’t do it wirelessly. But other than that, it was just like a normal interview. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. May I also ask, how long did it take for them to contact you for an interview? Thanks.

It took about a wk to hear from them via email about speed testing my computer. Then another wk for the interview and then almost 2 wks to hear back about the job (I GOT IT!) If you haven’t heard from them, it can’t hurt to call and ask about the status of your employment. The worst thing they can do is say they’re not interested.

Beware. This place is a revolving door because of poor management. Training is lacking and needs to be realistically paced. You are thrown on the phones after 2 weeks which is definitely not even prep time. They also push you to train on your own time which should be compensated for, but they don’t and that violating the FLSA. You will either sink or swim, The trainers are not really concerned with your success and it shows.
