How does Online Scoring Works?

There are actually standardized tests that involved writing your responses, not using the usual #2 pencil to fill in the circle. Because of this, the computer can’t grade these written responses- this is where ETS comes in with online or onsite scorers.

ETS has created a software application entitled Online Scoring Network (OSN) which enables scorers to score examinees’ written and spoken test responses online. You as the online scorer will rate and score these responses via the internet from your home office in accordance with ETS guidelines and training.

Is there training to become an Online Scorer?

Yes, the training process as an online scorer or rater will go through for each testing program includes:

  • Training via program-specific either website or paper base
  • Certification that prospective raters must complete in order to score the particular test
  • Ccheduling procedures for online raters to scoring sessions based your availability and the volume of tests
  • Mentoring from ETS scoring leaders who work with raters to help them score responses according to each testing program standards. You must complete a certification for each testing you would like to participate in as an online scorer.

Will I need equipment to be a Online Scorer?

Yes, prospective raters must have computer equipment that meets the minimum hardware and software requirements which are:

  • PC running Windows ME/2000/XP/VISTA
  • 15-inch or 17-inch (preferred) SVGA monitor for display of 1024 x 768 (recommended) resolution
  • At least 512 MB RAM, or higher
  • High speed Internet connection (i.e. DSL, Cable Modem, LAN Internet Explorer 6.x or higher)
  • Browser Version: Internet Explorer 6.x and Internet Explorer 7.x
Note: Netscape is not a supported browser and cannot be used within the ETS Online Scoring Network.
  • Separate phone line that can make and receive calls while you are connected to the internet
  • Call-waiting or voicemail on the separate phone line
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Vendor/version:?
    • Users of Microsoft JRE are advised to transition to Sun JRE.
    • Microsoft JRE does not support current Java features. Microsoft JRE and plug-in is included with Windows ME and 2000. The Microsoft JRE and plug-in is not included with Windows XP.

How can I find out what Java Version I have?

Click on this link to check your JRE version (link opens in a new window).

Can I use my Mac computer?

No, Sorry OSN does not currently support Mac computers.

What are the requirements to become a online scorer?

Depending the type of tests there are different requirements to becoming an online scorer.  Some things that would help your chances of being accepted is having  B.A. or higher degree from an accredited college or university and having at least 3 years full-time teaching experience and having previous scoring experience is a good start for most of the online scorer positions.

You will need to be trained and certified for each standardized test you would like to be an online scorer for.

How much does ETS plays as an online scorer?

Their job postings doesn’t state a salary and depending on the exam your applying for and with my research the salary varies at a range of $10 to $20 per hour for an online scorer. ETS pays you by check twice a month.

Do I get benefits as an online scorer?

According to the ETS HR Department, you do not get benefits and this is mainly due to the fact you are a part-time employee and ETS doesn’t offer any benefits in these positions.

How many hours can I work?

Each test has their particular set of hours and days and the hours are in blocks of 4-8 hours when the test is given that you would be assigned for as an online scorer. In other words, you can be working a few sets of days when testing is given and then there can be no work available when testing isn’t.

The great part of working for ETS is you are an employee not an independent contractor which is a big plus for those of you who don’t want to worry about calculating how much taxes you need to put aside for tax time each year.

I would like to work for them while I look for a full time job. I wonder if I can resign as soon as I get a full time job. Anyone knows what the policies are?

I worked for them this past year. I had to wait a long time between the time I was accepted as scorer and actually worked however. It did pay fairly well fortunately, and was consistent when I actually was working. I would work for them again, but they don’t have any current projects that I am qualified for.

Thanks for sharing your experience Karen! I love these jobs that let you put your expensive college degree to work and make some money back! 🙂 I will have to start making payments on my student loans this summer…boohoo

I also have worked for ETS. You do work designated shifts, so it is not a job you can work only when you want to, but that being said, they have many different shifts.

I am on the west coast and the home office is in New Jersey, so I usually work the early shift (5:30am). This is great for me because I am off by 2pm! Or if I work a 4 hour shift, I can be done with work in time to start another job at 10am!

Hours are not always consistent, so it can be risky if it is your only source of income or if you are a single income family and responsible for little ones.

Another great benefit is you can take time off with no explanations. In fact, you can actually stop work for up to three months and come back as if nothing had happened. It is great for teachers who have free time during school breaks because you can coordinate your breaks from ETS at the same time!

Also, it allows you to travel a little and still make money. I have taken my laptop with me to visit my mother for a week. She was at work during the day and so was I. I did not have to take time off as I have in the past to see family.

How large were the breaks between needing people? A couple of weeks or a couple of months?

The ETS Raters Certificate training and exam is one of the most opaque processes out there.

They don’t
1. Tell you up front how many recordings there are
2. Tell you what score you need to get to pass
3. Provide a grading rubric so you know how each type of recording is worth in score points or explain how the exam is graded
4. Provide better scoring guidelines in the training

Additionally, you are allowed 2 attempts to pass the certificate exam but they don’t tell you your score at all and don’t tell you where your weak areas were so you can prepare better for the second attempt.

As a teacher, if I gave a final exam like this, my teacher ratings would be so low because no student would be able to pass the exam and every student would complain.

I really don’t think they want anyone to pass and it is just a major weeding out process.

I just passed for the Redesigned SAT after 4 hours of training…I am not sure you took the same training I did.

They put you through several training modules which spell out for you exactly WHY each essay received the score it did, and then there are some practice sets as well. You have a fairly comprehensive rubric to follow…I didn’t do perfectly in training, but managed to pass the certification exam.

I have just been accepted as a SAT Rater, completed all of my hire paperwork and received my sign on information for the rater website (even able to lookup and submit for a schedule) but have not received anything yet for training. How long did it take you to receive your training? Was this your same experience? Thanks for any insight you can give!!

Hey, could someone who passed help me out? I scored mostly exact and adjacent for the training, so I was honestly taken aback when I failed my first certification. I really need to pass because my current situation requires me to work from home. Any pointers?

Same here Danie, I thought I did well on the practice tests so I was taken aback when I failed the certification. Now I need to take it for the final time tomorrow and I am scared, I don’t want to fail again. I asked ETS and they said they are not allowed to give feedback on the test because they don’t want information on how to pass to become available online. However, I do think they should tell us the score we need to meet, that way we can see how we score in the practice tests to determine if we are ready to take the certification.

It can be a frustrating job because you fill out what shifts you are available and then sometimes you are hardly given any hours. They must have over hired for fall 2016 because I only have 4hrs confirmed for November and I submitted over 60 available hours. So it is definitely not money you can count on
