2 hours after being fired:  I am watching Law and Order reruns on USA, eating a cup of chocolate pudding- the kind with the vanilla swirled through it! It was the only chocolate I could find in the house. I am still wiping away my tears.  I am in complete and total shock! So, watching my favorite show and eating chocolate is how I have chosen to comfort myself. This sucks!

Where do I go from here?

I keep asking myself this question. What the hell do I do now? I have depended so much on this job that it has become embedded into my daily life.  Obviously I know my options and I know I have so many opportunities available to me, but it just doesn’t satisfy my feeling of emptiness. I absolutely loved my job! It was beyond perfect for me and NOTHING compares!

I am so angry at myself for being careless enough to have worked while I was half asleep and making so many stupid stupid stupid errors! What was I thinking???? I knew better, I warn others about this, but I was feeling confident in my job and as though as I was just as embedded into the daily functioning of it as it was in my life. But they showed me! Boy, they sure showed me!

So I can sit here and sulk and cry and beat myself up over this or I can… got bed…err…I mean, turn this around and make the most out of it.  — (This is me trying to be positive in a completely horrible situation)

Overcome my fears5 hours after being fired:  I finally quit crying…I talked to some friends online, they boosted my spirits and felt sorry for me. I felt their hugs. It was almost as good as the chocolate pudding cup. But if I were asked to choose one…chocolate over friends! – just don’t tell them that πŸ˜‰

  • I have applied to Leapforce!! My application was approved and I am scheduled to complete the test soon! (very nervous about that!)
  • I have realized those small eggs I have been keeping warm come in REALLY handy right about now!! Here I come Merchant Circle!!!
  • I have examined my long-term career goals. I realize now that I will have more time to spend blogging and designing (my passions!). If I get this job at leapforce it will so help me understand more about how to create search engine friendly sites.
  • If I become more active at Userlytics, I will better understand how to make a site user-friendly (lots of work to be done here!)

All of my plans are working me toward my long-term career goals, while before I was just a sitting duck, waiting for my kids to start school before I really pursued my dreams of blogging and web design.

I am pretty darn good at making lemonade!

Thank you for reading, for following, for being a part of my dream and passion! I am so glad to have all of you as part of my world…God knows working from home can get lonely. I am so very fortunate.

O Miranda. Without you I never would have known anything existed. You are the bread to my butter and the jelly to my peanut butter.

I hate that this happened to you but I am so excited for where it is taking you. When I got my probation period for Title Editing I new I had to start looking some where else. Katie and I always say when you start getting comfortable then something is about to happen!

You are an inspiration to others!

Thank you Jess and thanks for being a part of my strength! You really helped me turn my attitude around and see how I can use this to my advantage. I am so glad to have such good online friends. You guys are always there for me! Thank you!

You are an amazing person. You have helped me in my times of need and please know I will be here for you. I can honestly say the virtual world does get lonely, but having a phenomenal friend like you has made this world a lot less lonely. You have so much drive that I know you will succeed at anything. I know the saying “it’ll all work out, blahblah” is sooo over-used, but I really feel like this is your opportunity to truly do the things you have set out to do. <3 <3 <3

Thank you Katie! Funny how I was literally broken earlier. My two year old was asking me what was wrong, wiping away my tears. I absolutely hate to cry in front of them, but there was no controlling it. I cannot believe how badly it effected me.

But now, I feel really empowered and good and actually a little relieved! Life is changing and I knew this was coming. I was getting too comfortable and it was high-time something shook things up! πŸ™‚

Thank you Katie for being there for me as well today. I honestly believe I have some of the BEST online friends EVER!

I keep forgetting you have a two year old as well! LOL πŸ™‚

So sorry this has happened to you. I am sure things will be fine. You have helped so many and now it’s your turn to move on to bigger and better…Good Luck!

Yes! Bigger and Better, it is scary and I hate feeling so unstable but I know in the end I will see this as the turning point toward a better future.

Oh boy, so sorry you lost your permissions with Demand (I assume that’s who you were fired with. But it sounds like you’ve bounced back nicely. Looking forward to hearing about how Leapforce goes for you, and this post is almost like a red flag for me to make sure I do things right with dupe checking!

And incidentally, I like the 2nd picture better than the first. It fits you better.

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 11:40 am

πŸ™‚ haha

The first picture is totally how I imagined myself at the time. Tears were dropping off my face. It is pretty pathetic as I think back to it now. haha But I do feel like the second picture now. I have lifted the weight and I am taking charge.

I’ve had eggs just vanish without warning (Bzzagent) which wasn’t just me but a mass release of nearly everyone but it still is a gut punch. I know you are shocked and hurt but one door closes and another really does open. The income loss hurts but I think you are ready for a challenge and growth now.

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 11:42 am

You are completely right Kim. It totally put me in to zone:uncomfortable but if I am going to grow and make better for myself, this had to happen. I never would have let TQA go and pursued other things, it just paid too well. But now I can- guilt free.

Miranda, I believe I can come pretty close to understanding exactly how you felt yesterday because it would be the same for me. I depend (my family depends) on this gig so heavily that it scares me. And I have had to up my daily quota to $75 five days a week thanks to the new bills that we’ve taken on. I know that my work starts getting sloppy/inaccurate every day when I get close to that goal, too so it would not surprise me to one day get a similar email.

All that said, I know you will be just fine. You are fortunate to be aware of so many other opportunities for work at home, and as you said this will open up time for you to work on your sites and your graphic designing — things which you are truly passionate about — and those projects will certainly benefit from you having additional time to spend on them!

Even though I did not particularly enjoy the Leapforce work, you are right that doing that job will help you learn more about what Google frowns on in regard to website design and content. And there’s no question it’s for sure one of the best non-phone work from home eggs out there. Working for Leapforce will also give you first hand experience with it for all those people who ask you about it! Writing is another good one so I’m glad to hear that you’re planning to start doing some writing for Merchant Circle. I guess writing is probably what I would go back to doing too.

I’m so sorry, but I enjoyed your post and am happy that you are seeing the good in this situation because it’s definitely there. I worried about you all evening yesterday!! You know I’ll give you all the tips/pointers you need for the Leapforce exam so don’t hesitate to ask. Good luck!

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 11:45 am

I kind of always knew that one day it would be gone. I tried hard not to rely on it too much, but apparently I did more that I realized. It is a really good gig. Just try not to do like me and get too comfortable and careless. After spending hours looking at thousands of titles, they all begin to blur- so easy to make mistakes. But my fault came in not stopping and returning with a fresh eye and instead just kept chugging along, many times half asleep.

I look forward to Leapforce, I hope I can pass the test. I feel like this is truly the path I need to be on to reach the goals I have set. I really think I needed this to happen.

Miranda, I hope you are feeling better this morning. I had a personal client start weeble-wobbling on me last week. I still don’t know what is going on with him for sure. It’s not a big gig, only about 10 hours per month, but it immediately sent me into panic mode. “What if all of my clients bail right now?!”

I’ve spent the last week hanging my sign on every virtual corner I can find. I have been reworking my sites to ensure all of my profit bases are covered instead of just assuming people should know what I do and what I have available.

It was rough at first. But, I’m feeling rather confident now. I got out of my comfort zone. I did things I didn’t think I could do. I’m seeing results.

If you ever need to talk to someone about the next move for that fabulous new business that I can’t wait to hear more about, you know where to find me. πŸ˜‰

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 11:48 am

Yes! Much much better this morning. Still scared and uneasy, but I am sure that will pass as my new opportunities begin to unfold. It has been a nice morning, not stressing about all the things I have to do. I was able to sit with my sister for a couple of hours, clean up the house, read some books to my girls without watching the clock!

I really appreciate your support and am feeling so blessed by all the love everyone has shown!

I have lots and lots of ideas pouring out of my head. So many things I have wanted to do with this blog that I never had time for, but now I am going to make it happen!!! I can’t wait!!!

Another door (or doors) will open up, God willing.
It might be better for you, I think you are on the right track focusing on your site more πŸ™‚

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 11:49 am

Me too Sakeenah. This is where my heart is! I know I can get this site grown enough to actually be my main source of income if I put the time and love into it. I am looking forward to finally being able to do this!

You reap what you sow!!! That statement is often looked upon unfavorably. However for you dear you have sown helpful seeds of knowledge and power you will reap many bountiful rewards. You created a site that not only provides job listings and leads, but also reviews of companies and practical advice for anyone that reads your blog. You’ve done the “homework and footwork” for us in many ways. You’ve shared willingly what you know, how you found out about it and who you know and how we can find out too. You’ve personally enlighten me as I didn’t know until your site that there was work beyond home based customer service agents. You’ve done a marvelous work Miranda. I’m so proud of you for sharing this with us. That took a lot of courage. I’m deeply grieved that your employment suddenly ended like it did. That’s a deep cut, I know. Your attitude is wonderful. Things are starting to look up for you already. Always remember you’ve done good things for many people, good things will happen to you. Even when it seems dark and gloomy, the light will shine through. Take care good care honey {{{{{{cyber hugs}}}}}}

It’s been my experience, unfortunately, that whenever I’ve gotten comfortable in a job or business and felt that I could really rely on it, something pulled the rug out from under me. Most recently, the rug was pulled out from under me in May, when my website of four years just disappeared one day. No explanation. No assistance. Just gone. Sorry. All those posts, all that work – gone.

I learned a valuable lesson though. Never rely on something you don’t control yourself. So four months later, and after crying for weeks (not kidding), my site is back up under my own domain. My traffic numbers are back up, if not my income. But I’ll get there.

Keep your chin up. You definitely have the right attitude – to jump right back on the horse. They can’t keep us down! πŸ™‚

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I remember when I realized your site was gone. I wondered for days what had happened. It was like a big disappointment. I am amazed by how quickly you have bounced back and I believe with everything in me you are much better off now than you were. Self-Hosted is so much better! My traffic doubled just from going from Blogger to WP! I thought since Google owned Blogger that it would bring better traffic naturally…but I was wrong. It just devalued its credibility I believe.

Thanks so much for all of your support. I am glad we are in the same ring of online networking!

You should definitely keep looking for another real job, one with benefits. The work-at-home stuff, good for maybe part-time work, but, I would stay far away from work-at-home jobs via computer. Just my opinion.

Miranda Grimm

September 21, 2011 at 8:33 pm

I respect your opinion Debra-Ann. And I will assume you referring to ‘real job’ not in the sense of work at home jobs not being real work, but real-world type jobs or usually called brick and mortar jobs. Please understand that there is a reason I work from home. I never would have even considered this an option if it did not mean enough to me to stay home. I do not HAVE to work, I am choosing to work. My husband makes enough for us to do just fine, but I enjoy working, I enjoy the extra money. My dream is to be working from home long after my kids are grown up and moved out. I enjoy the flexibility and I enjoy working for myself. I know that comes with a rocky foundation and is risky. But I do plan to pursue it God willing. I have lost Brick and Mortar jobs unexpectedly as well…so has my husband…it sucks being laid off! It is devastating. So, it is a cold hard fact I will face many more times in my life, regardless of where I or my husband work (home or for someone else) lost contracts, clients, can’t find enough work, my husband’s job could be gone tomorrow…we never know.

Miranda, I am very sorry about this, and I know its awful, but I want you to know how much your website has helped my family out. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to stay at home with my two year old and 5 month old, which is so important to my husband and I.

Good luck with Leapforce. I’m currently working with them, and love it.

Hang in there…it will get better!

Miranda,

Please let me be one of those friends who gives you a big hug. (((((((HUG)))))) All of us who work at home are vunerable to this sudden firing. I had a similar situation about three years ago with a phone job, and I was also left shocked and clueless about what to do.

Realize that there are so many other options and companies out there. If there weren’t, you wouldn’t have this terrific blog that explores all of these opportunities.

Sounds like you’ve already realized that and are applying to other places! Good for you. You want to keep the money flowing. It isn’t everything, but it is needed.

Good luck. Keep all of us posted. I know that you’ll shine just like your halo. πŸ˜‰ Yep, you’re an angel to all of us.

So sorry to hear you were fired. I had the rug pulled out from under me a few months ago when an online egg went poof, through no fault of my own fortunately. And a few years ago, I was fired from a B&M job, which was my fault. But it led me to working for myself, and hopefully I’ll always be able to work from home.

I have just recently found your website and have enjoyed and learned from the postings. Good luck in your leapforce exam! I’m considering that myself, so keep us posted!

I’m so sorry to hear this happened to you. I’ve never worked for Demand myself, but have heard that they can be hard to write for. I’ve discovered your blog recently, and there’s some really great posts and leads on here. Thanks for sharing, and I really hope things work out for you with Leapforce!

I totally just found this and though I am so sorry for you, I want to thank you for sharing. The EXACT same thing happened to me with the exact same company just a little before your wrote this. I could have kicked myself a hundred times for not being more careful. Lesson learned and I am moving on. Have you ever reviewed Valley Direct Media? I have had a great experience with them:)

It may be two years later, but I needed to comment anyway. I found myself in the same situation at the end of last week. While I followed the advice of all of the freelancers before me and had several eggs to fall back on, losing such a HUGE part of my monthly income was a complete blow to my confidence as well as my bank account. I’m still rebuilding and putting together a plan and today I came across this post. Just wanted to leave a comment to say thank you for being so honest and sharing your story & advice. Sometimes it’s so, incredibly helpful just to know that everyone has been through this. I’m hoping I can bounce back as well as you have!

Miranda Grimm

I am so glad you commented Jess. I actually ran across this post a few days ago again and it brought back so many memories. Looking back now, it was a pivotal point that changed my career for the better! Keep moving forward Jess!!
