Happy New Year’s to all the work at homers out there! I have been kind of quiet in the work at home world for a little bit and I just wanted to fill everyone in. My son is turning 2 in a few days and it marks almost two years since I began working at home. It’s been a wonderful journey and a path of learning and developing, but I’m right where I’m supposed to be.

Where did I start?

Almost two years ago I was working for OnPoint and Textbroker. I then moved onto writing for Merchant Circle and dabbling with private clients. I was mostly relying on content mills to get me through. I also did a little babysitting on the side and fought hard to build my growing business.

In November of 2011 I decided to start my own writing website. Which, thanks to Design by Miranda and Katie Jones, it got off on the right foot! I would spend time hanging around forums and picking up overflow. I also worked anywhere from ? cent a word to 1.5 cents a word. Additionally, I spent many months just doing overflow for some clients.

Where am I now?

In September of 2011 or so is when Merchant Circle shut down and the content mills started to become a thing of the past.

With that being said, I had paid attention to other freelancers and what they were doing for writing work. I signed up at oDesk.com and Elance.com and began to build my profiles.

I had some really good luck with oDesk and my work load stayed steady for quite some time. Most of my private clients last about 6-8 months at the shortest. I then began focusing on long term writing positions instead of writing for a quick dollar.

For almost 8 months I worked with a company doing social media. At any given time I have 3-4 gigs going to help sustain my income.

I’m still always marketing and applying for additional writing jobs.  I have been with myy longest standing client for almost 16 months.

I’ve also landed a long term social media content writing position which has helped me double my income while working from home. I also write for a couple of private clients on the side.  Since July I have started looking on Elance for more work. I also have my Fiverr gig up and running and that helps bring in some side work.

Where do I want to go?

Well, honestly the best plan for me in 2013 is to go with the flow. It’s worked so far. With a lot of faith and persistence it’s the only way to go. I’d be happy if I continued with the work I have now, but we know that everything can change in the blink of an eye in the work at home realm. I’d like to have a smooth transition in the beginning of April from two to three children at home with me as I welcome our third son. All of my kids will be under the age of four.

This is my work at home story. I started from no where and now I am actually making a real income from home.  I own a business and will keep building it in 2013.

What plans do you have for 2013?

I plan to work full-time for Apptical and (at least for the time being) still do freelance writing and transcription on the side.

Our stories are so similar! My goal is to just keep buiding up private clients and working Elance and my Fiverr gig…and hitting up those mills when needed. I am praying and trying to double my weekly income this year. This is an amazing journey:)

My 2013 Work-at-Home goals revolve around coaching brides-to-be (and anyone else for that matter) in getting healthy and losing weight. After my own personal success losing 40 lbs and then helping my mother and father-in-law to each lose 30, it just made sense. I could help a lot of people, and earn some cash in the process. In the past 14 months, I’ve coached 50 people to their goals and I’ve actually helped two of them start their own coaching businesses. My goal is to coach at least 100 people in 2013, but if all goals well, I’d really like to double that number. I have my eye on the goal and I’m focused on where I want to be. This week, I’m waiting for my LLC paperwork to come back from the Laywer as we take the next step to grow this. So excited!

Well done, Jess. You’ve made quite a journey. It’s inspiring. All the very best this year and an advance welcome to the beautiful addition to your family.

My desire and plan this year is to make more money online than I did last year. I’ve been earning online long enough to be able to do that – I haven’t though – so what it really boils down to is me, self belief, taking myself seriously, effort and focus.

What an inspiring post, Jess. It has been a joy watching you grow (no pun intended) in your freelance business. I am wishing you the best in 2013 with the arrival of your new son and the building of an already successful freelance practice.

My plan for this year is to try working from home, gradually. It’s been a long time since I’ve tried doing it full time. For now, I’m blogging and gathering information on the trends and prospects and honing whatever skills are needed particularly in transcribing.

That’s why I’m fortunate to chance upon wahadventures on which I can learn and share as well the information and tips.

In March of 2012, I transitioned from working as a hospital transcriber to working full-time from home as the owner of my own transcribing business. I started by working for several national companies part-time, cobbling together a full-time income. Then I was blessed with 3 steady local clients and I’m now making more than I was working for the hospital!

I’m also making a little bit of side money with my 2 scrapbook blogs, which are really my passion (wish I could make a good, steady income doing that … the “steady” part has been the challenge). For 2013, I plan to just keep doing what I’m doing in a challenging transcription market that loves shipping work overseas – not to mention EMR. Wish me luck!

I found your site at the beginning of my journey and it has been so educational and encouraging. Much success to us all in 2013!

I have an account in oDesk too. But I still couldn’t manage getting hired. I have done some small projects in the site. I still need to develop.
There are lots of scams on the et about working from home. Most of them are liars. Most of them advertise as if you will earn lots of money but after you purchase their product. And the prices start from very small amount and increases. Can you believe that by purchasing a service for 20 or 50 dollars you will be earning a month over 5000$. Generally these are only to sell their service and they earn big amounts due to the low costs. There are lots people that buy services with low cost which does not affect them. But after purchasing they give up. Because the reality is not as the advertisements made.
I had purchased a service that generally costed more than 100$ for only 15$ which was in discount last year. I checked it now, it’s still in discount:)))
Even I had purchased it by mistake twice and requested refund. Where in one month they also guaranteed if we don’t like the product refund can be made. I have read all the terms and requested for my both purchases. Where there was no result. All of my money went. The service is very elementary, there are some useful tips but all of them are general things that everyone can know. They are selling this knowledge with money:))
I work in another site where no payment is required and where I work at the moment. That’s the real thing. It’s an affiliate marketing site. I’m improving day by day my business there. It will take me some time in order to set it up.
I’m open also for other kind of works from home.

I wish you luck in your carrier Jess.

This year I am going to find great niche on the internet, fill it, take care, write articles about I like and slow monetizing it.
