How Much Does Rev Pay?

The pay is not huge, but it isn’t bad either considering there is no previous experience required.  Generally projects pay between $.50 to $.75 per video minute.  If you know anything about transcription you know that an audio minute is different than and actual minute, and the same is true of a video minute.  My understanding is that if a video is 20 minutes long, you are paid per minute for 20 minutes, not how long it actually takes you to write the captions.  It could take you a good deal longer than the actual video time if you need to rewind to hear something again, and it takes additional time to make certain that the video and captioning sync up. According to their website the average earnings per month is $240, with the top earning being $1,570.

Is it Flexible?

You can work as much or as little as you want.  You choose the projects you want to work on using a job board type set up.

Do I need Special Equipment?

You need a computer, headset, broadband internet, and strong English skills.

What is the Application Process Like?

The first part is quick and painless.  You start with a grammar test that asks multiple choice questions about word choice and other common grammar mistakes.  It took me less than 5 minutes.  The next part is to write @ least 50 words, and the topic I was given was my home town.  I do not know if that is the topic everyone is given.  Lastly you are given a closed captioning test with a 12 minute video.  I did not take this part, but it really beneficial to both parties, as you are given the opportunity to see what the work is all about, and they can see if you are going to be able to pick it up fairly easily.

What Is the Chatter?

The chatter about Rev in the work-at-home world is basically that there is plenty of work, they pay on time, but the pay is low.

Pros and Cons of Working for Rev

Pros:

  1. Flexibility: As a freelancer for Rev, you have the flexibility to choose when and how much you work. You can select projects based on your availability and preferences, allowing you to create a schedule that suits your needs.
  2. Remote Work: Rev offers remote freelance opportunities, allowing you to work from the comfort of your own home or any location with internet access. This eliminates the need for commuting and offers the convenience of working in a familiar environment.
  3. Variety of Projects: Rev provides a variety of transcription, translation, and captioning projects. This can offer diversity in the content you work on, which can be intellectually stimulating and allow you to expand your knowledge in different subject areas.
  4. Skill Development: Working on transcription and translation projects with Rev can enhance your language skills, typing speed, and attention to detail. This can be valuable for individuals looking to improve their linguistic abilities or pursue a career in language-related fields.
  5. Potential Earnings: Rev offers compensation for completed projects, and depending on your speed and efficiency, you may have the opportunity to earn a competitive income. The more projects you complete, the higher your earning potential.

Cons:

  1. Variable Work Availability: The availability of projects on Rev can vary. There may be times when there are fewer projects available, which can impact your ability to secure consistent work and earnings.
  2. Strict Deadlines: Rev typically imposes strict deadlines for project submissions. This can lead to pressure and may require you to manage your time effectively to ensure timely completion of assignments.
  3. Pay Rates: Some freelancers may find the pay rates offered by Rev to be lower than their expectations or the industry average. It’s important to assess whether the compensation aligns with your financial goals and expectations.
  4. Quality Expectations: Rev has quality standards that freelancers must meet, including accuracy and formatting guidelines. These standards may require additional effort and attention to detail to ensure your work meets the company’s requirements.
  5. Independence and Isolation: As a freelancer, you may work independently and may not have regular face-to-face interaction with colleagues. This can result in a sense of isolation for individuals who thrive in more social or collaborative work environments.

Conclusion

Earn extra cash in your spare time.It seems that Rev is a legitimate work from home company.  They offer the opportunity to work from home, on your own schedule, and they pay on time.  It does seem that the pay may be on the lower end of what some companies pay for the same type of work, but you do not have to have previous experience if you can pass the tests with Rev.  That being the case,  this may not be the best company to consider as a sole source of income, but rather as an egg to add to others in your basket.  It could also be a great way to earn some extra cash while watching fun, interesting, and educational videos.  It addition, the work could be an open door to learning a skill and gaining experience that will help you in the future if you decide to apply to a company that pays more for the same work.

I did the application process and captioned the first test video Monday night. Tuesday I got an email linking me to a video review of the first video and encouraging me to test caption 2 more videos. Each video has a generous deadline and you are given access to all of the training materials to review as you go. After completing the test videos I was told to expect a reply by email in the next couple days with critique on my tests and then possibly to be allowed to accept paying jobs.

I just did the training video transcription and they emailed me and said they weren’t going further with my application. I was so bummed out. I really REALLY want to get off the phones. REV said not to contact them to find out why so I’m not sure what I did wrong. I was really looking forward to this. 🙁

The best to everyone else.

I and several others have been getting deactivation emails. I received one for captioning that said my metrics were too low and I no longer had access to do captions. There was no warning; I was just cut off from captioning anymore. On the transcription side, I received an email stating my metrics were too low and I needed to improve them but my metrics are very good.

I have been reading about Rev on other work at home sites and see that I am not the only one they are doing this too. Some with no pay for completed work after they are deactivated. The emails they send do not allow you to reply back to them. Also the pay is absolutely awful. The overall sound quality is terrible as well. I wanted to try Rev for a side job but it pays so little and with the issues stated above, it is not worth the time.

Wow! I may have dodged a bullet by not being accepted by them. Sorry for what you and others are going though with this. How awful 🙁

Rev is a scam. Please everyone! Report them to the BBB, Consumer Affairs, and the Federal Trade Commission. Don’t work for them. They are not worth it. What kind of company fires talented workers without warning and then makes up a lie to justify it? REV IS A SCAM. DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO ALL OF THEIR FAKE POSITIVE REVIEWS.

Well I’m glad (and not so) glad I’m not the only one. Yeah, this company is such a scam. They expect the world from you for only a few cents (literary). They closed my account without warning too. My metrics were even higher than those of Revv+ but it didn’t matter. They said my work was too late, but what do they expect? You have all this rules to remember, the audio is often awful, and their time limits are usually unrealistic. Event then, my work was pretty flawless. I almost wonder if they canceled my account because I called them out on contradicting themselves when they reviewed my work. They would say one thing would be fine for one caption, then all of a sudden, it would not be acceptable for the next caption. Now, I’m just worried that I wont get paid for the last jobs I submitted, because they won’t let you login to at least look at your pending payments. To anyone thinking about working for them, take my experience as a warning

I worked for Rev as a captioner and was unjustifiably deactivated. In fact, they LIED about their reason. DO NOT WORK FOR THESE SCAMMERS. Report them to the BBB, FCC, FTC and Consumer Affairs, especially if you were not paid for your work after deactivation!!! Rev should be shut down!!!! They used to be called Fox Translate, and when they were under that name, they had a terrible reputation. Let people know the truth about this horrible scam company!

I’ve been working on Rev for the last month or so. It’s been a lot of fun, I’ve really enjoyed it. I just hit my “400 minutes transcribed” marker, which means I’m eligible to start grading the work of others. Rev has a good ranking/promotion system.

I meticulously worked on their test video just to receive a notification that it was not good enough. They basically demand perfection for the lowest grade pay. What they need to do is hire PROFESSIONALS and pay them accordingly. I’ve seen plenty of captioned work already on television & DVD that was horrendous grammar-wise. How did that garbage get through? I’ll have to agree with other posters here that this is just another scam to get free or cheap labor from desperate people.

Yeah I have been captioning for Vdos for two years and to my heart, I had done well with the test video but the reply was they cant go forward with the application. It was very rude. Hope they get what they deserve.

These people H ave many different applicants caption videos as part of the screening process, then tell them they are not hired and use the captioned video by the applicant to make money. Stay away from this company.

Miranda Grimm

February 5, 2016 at 3:24 pm

No, I dont believe that is happening here. During the screening process, you see that they already have the very video you just captioned done, and they walk you through it, so clearly it’s a video they have everyone do. I would be careful about assuming things like that and then proclaiming it as the truth.

Miranda I assume you work for them, and your job is to come onto sites such as this and try and placate disgruntled people who feel they have been screwed over by them. To give a more objective review. It is fine to make a bit of extra pocket money with plenty of flexibility, but the pay is not good. You are lucky to make what amounts to minimum wage for the time you invest. That is the upside. The downside is they can shut you down at any time with no warnings for invented and arbitrary reasons. Perhaps some people were not doing a good job, but I feel pretty hard pressed to believe that the same people making the same exact complaint of being shut down without warning and not being payed for completed work is just all some made up story that every agreed to get in on. They use freelance people who want the flexibility so they can pay them very little, and, because people are from all over, there is no one unified voice where workers can come together to file suit when they simply decide to shut your account down for apparently no reason and not pay you for completed work.

April 9, 2017 at 10:19 am

I 100% agree with this adding they seem to intentionally target the desperate (those who don’t have many options when it comes to work due to their life circumstances) or the naive (those who just don’t realize how long the job actually takes vs the pay they get and blame themselves for not being fast enough when it really isn’t them. It’s the job).

Rev once paid decently and treated their ICs fairly. That is simply no longer the case. They deliberately pay far less than minimum wage now with zero attempt at adequate or fair compensation and this alone makes them unethical not to mention closing accounts without warning.

This company should be investigated for its exploitation of workers and its unethical, immoral, unfair, unjust practices. .

First of all, she is correct in saying that test videos are not used for profit, as they immediately play the test video back for you to show you how it should have been done. Once you are hired, your work is screened by graders, never sent straight to the customer, until you caption 300 minutes with acceptable scores. So, no, they don’t use applications to get free caption work. It’s silly to lie and say they do.

Second, I’m not naive. I time myself on every single job, divide the total payment by my total minutes worked then multiply the result by 60 to calculate dollar per hour pay. Seasoned Rev captioners can make $10-20 per hour worked on average. Sometimes $30 on re-do jobs or jobs with scripts. I made $14 per hour on a video by my second week. If you make under minimum wage, you don’t type fast enough and should find other work. It isn’t their fault if people work too slowly. They even tell people who type slower than 70wpm not to apply.

Rev pays 0.54 to 0.90 per video minute. That is the same as $32.40 – $54.00 per video hour. The “standard” pay per hour for PRO transcribers is $45-50 per hour transcribed. Many freelance sites other than Rev pay $20 per hour transcribed, far less than Rev. If one wants to make professional pay or more, one should get a degree and brick and mortar experience so they can apply for professional jobs. One shouldn’t expect Rev to pay above the professional standard for rookie work.

Also, almost everyone saying they were fired unfairly has posts full of typos. It is possible that their work was the same. As someone else said, even if your metrics are fine because graders missed your mistakes, Support might get a complaint from the customer and go back to look at your work again and find flaws the graders missed. This can get you fired with no warning. Harsh, maybe, but not a scam.

Well I was pretty sure I wanted to sign up, but after hearing the comments on the policies… I can’t begin to image how discouraging might be to get fired without a justified cause and so much work for so little compensation… I better pass

Try it. I was not able to pass the transcription test but was able to pass and get hired as a captioner. I received my first day pay via Paypal today. I have worked for them for 3 days and I am now a Revver. I was a Rookie for 2 days. Their appreciation on a job well done is overwhelming. That makes me love the company even more.

I guess I’m fortunate that my experience with Rev has been different from many on this website. I began working for them on 5/17/15 as a Rookie captioner and I am still with the company. I am now a Revver Plus on both the caption and transcription side. I am a full-time homeschool parent and this is my part-time job. No, I do’t make a ton of money, but enough to pay for homeschool classes, trips, and extras. In May ’16 I earned $1493.42; April was less at $918.71; March was $1013.42. So not bank-breaking, but for me the trade off is that I can stay home with my kids and work a flexible schedule. And, it does take time and patience to get into the groove of things.

Revver+

April 8, 2017 at 11:57 am

I have an active account there as a transcriptionist and am the highest level (Revver+). I just want to add my two cents to this thread to confirm a few things. Yes, they can absolutely and do terminate accounts WITHOUT WARNING. Apparently, even if your performance metrics are all solid and meet or exceed what’s required, Support can go back and look at your work, grade it (or regrade it if has already been graded) and on that basis terminate your account. You will not have recourse to dispute this. They just ignore your emails trying to get answers about why you were terminated.

This is highly unfair and is due to their flawed grading system. You see, other Revvers grade your work, not Support or not a dedicated grading team. Their ratings can be all over the map as could their interpretation of the Style Guide. Some graders are overly harsh. Some graders are too lenient. It’s the luck of the draw as to what grade you might end up with. This lack of consistency in their grading system is Rev’s faulty. It’s horribly unfair when you get all 5s and you think you’re doing a great job, so you don’t change anything only to have your account closed abruptly because Support regraded it lower and without warning closed your account. Just completely unfair.

As far as pay–it’s abysmal. You will be lucky to earn even close to minimum wage. More typically, you will get far FAR below it. Given the poor audio quality of most of the work, you can typically expect to earn $4 an hour (or less) since there have been a series of pay cuts since mid-2015 to where now the jobs are starting at 45 cents an audio minute and then staying there, despite having multiple unclaims.

The lousy, unethically low pay alone is a reason to avoid Rev, but it doesn’t end there. One of the changes they made within the past few years (besides slashing the pay) is that you will automatically have a job you are in the process of doing taken from you. Even if you have almost completed it, you will be unclaimed from the job automatically and not get paid a single penny for any of the work you did up to that point.

Final word of warning: Pay attention to the dates of any glowing reviews as to working for Rev.com. Things have changed DRASTICALLY over the past two years. This company has developed a total lack of respect for it’s ICs, and treats them like disposal Kleenex. They pay unfairly and don’t care. It’s unethical IMO since they know they pay far less than what is acceptable or humane. Bottom line: AVOID!!!

Revver+

April 8, 2017 at 12:24 pm

“You will automatically have a job you are in the process of doing taken from you.”

Let me clarify–I should have stated:

“If you are an hour past your deadline, you will automatically have a job you are in the process of doing taken from you.”

This is a new rule that was put in place to strictly enforce deadlines. No exceptions are granted no matter how good your reason is or how much work you’ve done to that point.

Christ, Rev is not a scam. I’ve been doing freelance work for them for over 8 months now. Paid weekly, on time, every time. If you type fast you make decent pay. If it takes you 10 hours to caption 10 video minutes, OF COURSE THE PAY ISNT WORTH IT and this obviously isn’t the job for you. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED TO TYPE FAST TO MAKE ANY REAL MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. Additionally, when you first start as a rookie, you can only take low paying, short jobs. Stick with it. Within a day or two you get bumped up. Audio quality is always fine for the assignments I take. If you come across an assignment you don’t like, or if the audio is bad, simply DONT TAKE THE JOB.

Yes, you can be fired at any time for no reason at all. You are a freelance employee. Don’t let the people who didn’t make the cut or who were fired for submitting late work deter you from this opportunity. People just love to complain. It’s easy work, no experience necessary and is cool for supplemental income. I use it to add some extra cash to my savings. If anyone has any questions, let me know. I referred a friend of mine last week and she was working within a couple days. They’re always hiring.
