As a blogger I get excited when I learn of new ways to make a profit from my passion. So, when I learned a program I was already using, nrelate, could earn me some extra cash I was thrilled to learn more. But is the pay worth the consequences? Let me explain.

What is nrelate?

nrelate is a blogging tool that helps your readers browse your site. When a reader reaches the bottom of the post they will see a few of your recent related posts that are similar to the article they just read. You can see it in action at the bottom of this post. This is great for both you and the reader. Your readers are spending more time on your site while your readers are getting more of what they love. nrelate is simple to install and they give basic installation instructions for WordPress, Blogger, Hubspot and Tumblr.

How do you make money with nrelate?

nrelate also has a way you can turn one or more of the related articles into a sponsored or paid link. The purpose is to still provide related content to your readers but because it is sponsored, it will go to a different site. Down side is that you are sending traffic away with a tool meant to keep your traffic on your site. So, as a blogger this is really only worth it if the pay is good!

(Example pictured below)

How much does nrelate pay?

Not much at all! Not enough for me to keep the sponsored ads on my site any longer! I will keep them up for a few days to allow most of the readers to see the sponsored link but then it’s going down!

I have had the sponsored ads active on my site, on every post, for the last 5 weeks. My 60,000 page views through that time has earned my site a whopping………$2.19!
71 people have clicked on a sponsored ad (according to their tracking records). Which means I turned 71 people away from my site for really no return.

Additional nrelate features

nrelate also offers in-text links, which I have not tried because I prefer infolinks.  Considering how little the related post ads paid, I can’t imagine this will be any better. Also, compares to the larger sites such as infolinks and kontera, I question how many advertisers nrelate has that can provide a variety of paid links.

Similar Platforms

There are other platforms similar to nrelate that provide content recommendation solutions for websites and blogs. Such include the following:

1. Outbrain

Outbrain is a popular content discovery platform that offers personalized content recommendations to engage and retain website visitors. It provides recommendations for related articles, videos, and other content based on user behavior and interests. 2. Taboola

Taboola is another leading content discovery platform that offers personalized recommendations to increase user engagement and drive traffic. It provides publishers with recommendations for relevant articles, videos, and other content based on user preferences. Taboola helps publishers boost audience engagement and monetize their websites.

3. Revcontent

It provides recommendations for related articles, videos, and other multimedia content. Revcontent offers native ad placements and advanced targeting options to help publishers increase revenue and expand their reach.

4. Shareaholic

Shareaholic is a comprehensive content amplification platform that offers various tools for content discovery, sharing, and engagement. It provides related content recommendations, social sharing buttons, and analytics to help publishers optimize their content strategies and increase audience engagement.

5. Gravity

Gravity is a content personalization platform that uses machine learning to deliver personalized content recommendations. It analyzes user behavior and preferences to provide relevant content suggestions across websites, mobile apps, and other digital platforms. Gravity helps publishers improve user engagement, increase time on site, and drive conversions.

Overall Conclusion

Its obvious I am not a fan of nrelate’s partner program. But I do really love the tool itself. It is great at providing the readers with easy access to more of my content.

I totally agree Miranda. I use it on my site and it’s great for keeping my readers on my site longer. I can’t deny that my bounce rate has gone down since using it. But I don’t think their sponsored links are worth it with such low pay. If it was possible to earn more from that, then maybe.

Yeah, I think it is a great tool for bloggers. My bounce rate has improved and adds to the ease of using the site. It makes me wonder who their market really is, if 60,000 pageviews brings in $2…I can’t imagine anyone finding this of value!

Its good to replace Linkwithin with nrelate! you have the option to customize which isn’t in linkwithin. As you said, its not worth of displaying those ads!

But isn’t is the 70 clicks for which they are paying? I mean it’s not the 60k views that would actually be the defining metric if I am not wrong. Just trying to clear my doubt. Thank you.

Miranda Grimm

Yes, that is correct Vishnu. It pays for clicks, regardless of traffic. I didn’t make that clear.

The reason the traffic is mentioned is to show that it took that many page views just to get 70 clicks. The CTR may be poor because of their lack of quality ads, placement, the audience or any other number of reasons.

Of course, what works or doesnt work here on this site may work really well on a different site/niche.

I have been using nRelate on my blog for the past 3 months and I haven’t earned $10 yet. I am thinking that changing the ad space into another link on my blog may prove to be more beneficial. I really wish they paid more as I like the service. nRelate is still a great plugin.

I am glad to read this article. I just changed from another related posts plug in to this one and was considering the sponsored ads. Now I will pass, thanks for saving me the time.

I use this on my site as well, but I can’t say the nrelate plugin has paid me all that well to be honest. I’m considering taking it down rather than turning people away from my site.

Can you opt out of the ads and just have the widget suggest your recent or related articles?

Miranda Grimm

January 14, 2014 at 9:14 pm

The last time I used nrelate you could absolutely use it to just show your recent/related articles. I had no problems with it but my hosting company at the time (hostgator) told me nrelate was absorbing too much of the server space. I think all of the “you may also like” wordpress plugins are the same way though.

First of all Thanks for the details Miranda ,but this post was written on june 8 2012 which is quite a long time back, i read it then and i read it today as well i just want to ask that :is the click through rate of the nrelate adds same as they were before coz the plugin has grown older and has greater no. of userbase now i think the advertisements may be paying out more then they used to pay before is that possible what you say ???

Miranda Grimm

That is absolutely possible- and definitely something worth considering. I may give it another chance and see if it shown improvement- or maybe others will let us know.

I have come to know about nRelate today while trying to find ab alternative for LinkWithin. $2 is really peanuts for so many users but I would still like to give it a try.
Very informative article though!

I’d like to say that I’m shocked CTR but to be honest I’m not, which says a lot really. Bloggers put a lot of time, effort and hard work into their blogs and the majority of the time they just seem to get shafted.

I really like nRelate – I never did the ads and it sounds like that was the right decision.
I am super bummed though because the product is going away – see Farewell post http://nrelate.com/content/2014/12/01/farewell/ – does anyone have a recommendation for a replacemetn tool?
