Back to School! My oldest daughter starts Kindergarten on Monday!! I cannot believe it. But it makes me pause and be grateful for all the time I have been given with her thanks to my decision and ability to find a way to work from home. My three year old still needs me here but even when they are both in school, it will be nice to know I wont be struggling to get home before they do, worry that if they get sick I might lose my job and finding alternative care through Summer and Holiday breaks. I am home to stay because it just makes sense.

BloggingPro published an article that touched a little on why it just makes sense to stay home and work.  It highlights some of the perks even non-moms receive from leaving behind the daily commute and business attire. It brought back faint memories of sitting on the interstate with traffic backed up for miles, hungry and eager to get back home.

It also reminded me of how much I missed the office drama and my boss telling me to keep the staples 1/3 of an inch from the side of the paper and at a 45 degree angle…oh geez I had a bad bad boss!!! I worked as an office assistant and I had to follow some very strange rules…like having to use the numbers above the letters on the keyboards instead of the 10 keypad! (Dear Miss Nellums: It is NOT more efficient if you are not used to it!) Okay I am ranting and becoming more and more thankful that I get to control my own ship! Let’s move on.

Get Familiar with the Work at Home Community

A good blogging friend of mine, Angie Nelson, operates a work at home blog and she came up with a brilliant idea. There are so many blogs that help us learn more about working from home and all of the resources available. Angie has decided to create an event next month that will bring as many work at home blogs together as a resource for anyone interested in learning all they can about working from home. If you would like to register your work at home blog you can visit the site and submit your blog info. Everyone will be able to benefit from this event though! Show up anytime from Sept 7-10 to view the list of legitimate work at home blogging resources.

Starting Your own Home Business?

Andrea from Simply Organized Living, a successful website that covers living and working a simple and organized life from home, recently shared her top five lessons learned. I am a huge fan of her site and her overall take at life. Her reminders sound pretty similar to what I would say as well. A new business is rarely an overnight success. Expect to work a couple of years for free, have a plan on how you will accomplish that and don’t give up!

You cannot quit half-way up the hill and just roll back down. Then all the work you put into climbing will have been in vain. Take a break, catch your breath and keep going! Once you reach the top you will have a chance to sit down and take in the view. But you must keep going!!

{feature} Extra Money Site: SlicethePie.com

Slice the Pie is a fun way to earn some extra money while listening to up and coming music artists and giving them feedback. I love this site because it helps these new artists get their big break and gives them constructive criticism while putting a little money in our pockets. Here are work at home adventures we have given some tips to making the most at SlicethePie but I say just enjoy it! Do it when you need a break! Check out SlicethePie.

I hear you on bad bosses….

I started work at a large body shop/ UHaul place way back when. I was to answer the phone and fill out work orders. Except I had no clue who anyone was or what dept they were in. So, when the phone would ring, I’d find out what they needed, then ask the supervisor where to transfer the call. Except she’d get all annoyed and tell me to “just handle it”. Ummmm….how exactly?

I quit after 3 days. The final thing for me was after making a mistake on a written work order, I threw it away and started another. When I got back to work after lunch, I was chastised for doing this and told never to do it again. They kept track of the numbers on the work orders and had fired the last gal for “wasting” 3 work orders.

Yep, I’m ever so glad to be out of the “normal” workforce!
