I have often seen people posting in forums about making a little extra side cash with sites like Gather and My Lot. I had never really understood how these worked but decided to take a deeper look and try to provide an insight to this way of earning money online.

What is Gather.com?
Gather is an interesting site. It allows for socializing, browsing news events and finding information. It is also a place where registered users can post anything from poetry, articles, pictures and comments on content to earn money. Gather is a social networking site that allows you to even meet new people and has a function to let members share their current status, cause you know we all need another way to share our daily life events- like Facebook and Twitter aren’t enough. Sarcasm aside, Gather is an all-in-one site. Communicate with friends, share information, stay up to date with news events and even research whatever topic is on your mind, all on one site!

How Can I Make Money With Gather?
From what I can tell, Gather offers points for portion of the ad revenue your content provides. They say one point is roughly equivalent to 2 cents. “Gather Points can be exchanged for gift certificates for goods from participating points partners or for a cash credit to your PayPal account”.
I have never understood why companies like Gather choose to pay with points instead of actual money. It seems to really confuse things and turns people, like me, away from even attempting to work with the company. But the proof may be in the pudding!

Additionally, if you are an experience freelance writer, Gather will pay up to $13 per article, based on page views! You can visit http://www.skyword.com/ to apply for the writing position based on your subject of interest. I have not done a lot of research on this side of Gather but will likely in the future.

Is Gather Really Worth It?
Honestly, I am not sure yet. I have read some people excited over receiving enough points to redeem up to $200 worth of gift cards over a 6 month period. This is definitely not something you can do to earn a full time income, but could be a way to earn for doing things you may already do. I am going to give this site a try and will be sure to post my results.

I like Swagbucks (a points earning search engine with a provided toolbar). It doesn't take any extra work. They have a pretty good Swagbucks Store for spending your points.

I agree. I like swagbucks. It's a lot of fun. It is that excitement for swagbucks that makes me want to give Gather a try.

I have found some good craft patterns from Gather, but have never tried to use them for a writing opportunity.
