Independent contractor jobs usually allow you to work around your schedule and may offer you more control over your finances.

Plus, with an independent contractor job, you’re basically starting your own work from home business.

There’s also a lot of variety in independent contractor positions, so you won’t be stuck in a typical 9 to 5 job doing the same thing every day.

Instead, you can work with a different client or on a different project every day.

What Are Independent Contractor Jobs?

An independent contractor is not to be confused with an employee. As an employee, you fall under the tax requirements of an employee, meaning that your employer will take taxes from your paycheck.

However, as an independent contractor, you’re responsible for your own taxes.

Self-employment taxes can be a bit confusing at first, but once you get into the swing of it, you’ll start learning how much to save from your pay for taxes.

As an independent contractor, you’ll have some flexibility in the clients and projects you want to work with.

Some jobs will require you to commit to a certain number of hours per week or a few specific schedule slots each week.

But, the majority of independent contractor jobs offer much more flexibility in scheduling than regular work from home jobs.

And, as an independent contractor, you work for yourself, not an employer.

A company will contract you for work, but you’re responsible for yourself.

So, if you’re considering independent contractor jobs, you should be self-motivated and organized to keep track of your clients and projects.

Another Idea for Independent Contractors to Make Money in Their Spare Time

If you’re an independent contractor who wants another tool to make extra money when you have downtime (or are in between gigs), then try this tip:

Get yourself set up on the best reward and survey sites.

On their own, they won’t really make up the income you’d get from a job.

But when you combine taking online surveys or playing games, watching videos, or earning cash back from reward sites, you could have a lucrative side gig.

That’s why these types of sites are ones I often recommend to people who want to work from home and earn money in a fun way.

Here are several of my favorites for you to check out, bookmark, sign up for, and use when you’re having a slow spell with work or just need some extra cash:

More Independent Contractor Jobs

There are so many more independent contractor jobs that it would be impossible to list them all here, so this list includes several of the most popular options in a variety of categories.

But we have several more industry-specific work from home job lists here on Work at Home Adventures!

If you’re looking for a specific type of independent contractor job, like tutoring, check out some of our most popular roundups:

Guess What? You Can Create Your Own Career Path Too!

The thing about being an independent contractor is that there are so many awesome jobs and career paths right at your fingertips.

And you never, ever have to sign up for another company if you don’t want to.

Like I mentioned earlier, being an independent contractor means you’re a business person.

You’re self-employed and work for yourself.

However, when you get “hired” as a contractor for a company, you don’t have quite as much leeway as you would if you started your own business and found your own clients.

That’s where the flexibility comes in to truly set your own schedule from start to finish every week, work where you want, how you want, with all the freedom and creativity you desire.

Instead of applying as a contractor for the companies listed above, you could always venture off on your own to start a business using the skills and interests you have.

In other words, freelance!

Here are several examples of freelancing businesses that you can start and give yourself the freedom you deserve:

  • Freelance writing
  • Editing and proofreading
  • Web design
  • App development
  • Graphics design
  • Virtual assistance
  • Digital marketing
  • SEO optimization
  • Transcription and translation
  • Web research
  • Technical and customer support
  • Game or software development
  • Animation
  • Contract and grant writing
  • Lead generation
  • Business coaching
  • Financial planning

That’s only the beginning.

When carving out your niche, take into consideration the things you love to do and blend those with the things you’re great at to come up with your perfect freelancing business!
